Jenna Coleman Discusses Playing a Real Life Queen in 'Victoria'

Period drama Victoria is finally coming to America this January, to fill the hole that Downton Abbey has left in our hearts. Or, try to anyway. Even though it’s a much more straightforward historical drama that’s based on a real person, Victoria has a similar feel. The show’s Downton-esque vibe can no doubt be attributed to its many sumptuous costumes, its rather attractive cast, and the swoony love story at its center.

The story of Victoria, though, centers on the early years of the young queen’s rule. She came to her throne at just 18 years of age, and went on to rule for a (at the time, record-breaking) 63 years. Over the course of her life she had nine children and 42 grandchildren, survived at least seven assassination attempts, buried her husband, and eventually ruled over the largest empire the world had ever seen.

ITV has released another new clip from its upcoming period drama Victoria.

The eight episode series stars Doctor Who alum Jenna Coleman as the titular monarch, and it charts her early life, from her ascension to the throne in 1837 to her courtship and marriage to Prince Albert.

The newly released scene features the moment that the young Victoria – or Princess Alexandrina Victoria as she was known then – wakes up to learn that her uncle King William IV has died and she is now queen.

ITV has released the first full trailer for its splashy upcoming period drama Victoria, to what is undoubtedly the delight of costume drama fans everywhere.

Doctor Who’s Jenna Coleman stars as the titular queen, in her first major role since departing the TARDIS last year. And if this clip is anything to go by – it seems like it’s probably going to turn out to be a pretty smart career move for her, because Victoria looks great.
