Almost anyone who has watched a great deal of British television will agree that BBC Three supernatural dramas are a unique breed. From Being Human and The Fades to In the Flesh and Wreck, there's nothing conventional or predictable about these tales of vampires, werewolves, zombies, and ghosts. In these boundary-pushing series, their supernatural elements are almost always larger metaphors for real-life problems and journeys.

Next to join this grand tradition is Domino Day, a deliciously dark and unabashedly feminist drama about twenty-first-century witchcraft, From its initial description and images, it is clear that the show has serious Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Charmed vibes, and conceptually feels like a worthy successor to the many excellent BBC Three supernatural offerings that have come before it.

Set in modern-day Manchester, the series follows the story of the titular Domino (Siena Kelly), a young woman who spends all her time on dating apps. But she's not looking for a soulmate or even a quick hook-up. No, she's swiping right to hunt. A powerful witch who doesn't understand the extent of her own abilities, all Domino knows is that she needs to feed off of the energy of others to survive. And if she has to hurt someone, then what better target could there be than unsavory, even dangerous men? Men who probably deserve to be punished?

Desperate for answers, Domino longs for a community that can help her understand who she is, but what doesn't know is that a Manchester coven is already tracking her every move, convinced that they have to stop her before she destroys everyone around her, including them. But when a figure from Dgiveomino’s past comes back to haunt her, will it given them a reason to band together or kick off a final showdown?

Alongside Kelly, the series ensemble cast includes Babirye Bukilwa (Dreaming Whilst Black) as Sammie, Poppy Lee Friar (In My Skin) as Geri, Alisha Bailey (Save Me) as Kat, Molly Harris (Industry) as Jules, Sam Howard Sneyd (Clarity and Chaos) as Silas, Percelle Ascott (Tin Star) as Leon. The series also stars Lucy Cohu (COBRA), Christopher Jeffers (The Other One), Jonah Rzeskiewicz, and Maimuna Memon.

Here's the series' logline.

Domino is a young witch with extraordinary powers seeking to understand who she is, whilst danger lurks around the corner.

The six-part series is created and written by Lauren Sequeira (Gangs of London), with individual episodes written by Charlene James and Haleema Mirza. It is directed by Eva Sigurdardottir and Nadira Amrani, with Nick Pitt as series producer and Megan Ott as producer. Sequeira is also an executive producer, alongside Laurence Bowen, Chris Carey, and Elinor Day for Dancing Ledge Productions and Lucy Richer and Ayela Butt for the BBC.

"Don’t expect broomsticks, pointy hats, and wands — these are witches like you’ve never seen before; cool, provocative, and full of grit. They are all simply spellbinding onscreen, and Siena is the perfect Domino Day," Sequeira said in a statement when the series was announced.

Domino Day premiered on BBC Three and BBC iPlayer on Wednesday, January 31, and will air weekly through March 6. The series does not yet have an American distributor but with its contemporary feel and buzzy supernatural premise, surely some streamer has to be ready to take a chance on this? Fingers crossed.
