'MobLand' Breaks Code of Silence to Announce Season 2 Renewal

We here at Telly Visions were not kind to MobLand, either in the extremely truncated run-up to the series after the streaming service nabbed the series from Showtime or in our initial review. After all, we were talking about a project that had all the makings of a slam-dunk hit — a big-name director in Guy Ritchie, a cast that included literal living legends like Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren, plus a prime movie star in Tom Hardy — being grossly mishandled. It felt like a microcosm of why Paramount+ failed as a streaming service, and more broadly, why its parent company was preparing to be taken over by Skydance. It also made what should be a guaranteed Season 2 questionable.

But Paramount+ did learn one lesson during its short existence: Binge drops may work for Netflix, due to its tightly programmed algorithm, but everyone else should stick to the tried and true method of the last century of television: one episode a week, every week, same bat time, same bat streaming service. By the time MobLand's ten-episode run concluded at the end of two and a half months, the series had managed to hit sleeper hit status, with the series' premiere episode reaching ~26 million views, and enough sticking around to keep the show floating about in the Nielsen Top Ten for the whole back half of its run.

As this is the first non-Yellowstone or Star Trek-related hit Paramount has managed to launch (despite the best efforts of its marketing team), Season 2 was all but assured by the time the first season finale rolled around. Paramount didn't even wait a full 30 days before announcing the series would return, greenlighting it in the waning days of June 2025, even as the deadline for the Skydance-Paramount merger (which technically is June 30) shows signs of almost certainly slipping back a few more months.

Unsurprisingly, the fast turnaround means there is no synopsis yet. (Though, to be fair, there wasn't one for Season 1 until mere days before the premiere.)

Perhaps more notably, there is no confirmation of who in the cast will return, possibly due to concerns about spoiling some of the significant character deaths at the end of the show's first season.

That being said, one assumes that Tom Hardy (Peaky Blinders) will return as Harry Da Souza, as will Joanne Froggatt (Downton Abbey) as his wife, Jan. Also highly likely to return: Pierce Brosnan (James Bond) as Conrad Harrigan, Helen Mirren (The Queen) as Maeve Harrigan, Paddy Considine (House of the Dragon) as Kevin Harrigan, Lara Pulver (Sherlock) as Bella Hannigan, and Anson Boon (Pistol) as Eddie Harrigan.

Technically, this is Jez Butterworth's second big hit with Paramount+. (He also penned The Agency.) He will return to pen Season 2 alongside Ronan Bennett (Day of the Jackal). Ritchie is also expected to return and direct at least some episodes, if not the entire season. All three continue to serve as executive producers along with Hardy; the rest of the executive team includes Keith Cox, Nina L. Diaz, David C. Glasser, Kris Thykier, Ivan Atkinson, Hardy, Dean Baker, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin, and Bob Yari.

No timeline has been announced for the production of MobLand's second season. However, since Paramount has larger problems to deal with this week, we'll accept that as a simple matter of priorities. Once the merger closes (if the merger closes), there will hopefully be more information forthcoming.
