Watch the Teaser Trailer for 'Luther' Season 5
Idris Elba is set to return for another go round in the iconic coat as everyone’s favorite tortured detective John Luther and, to celebrate, the BBC released its first teaser trailer for Luther Season 5.
Yes, you read that right, Luther is getting a fifth season. This might come as a surprise to some, since it sort of felt like Season 3 wrapped things up, only to be followed by a shorter fourth season that also sort of felt like it wrapped things up.
Luther can keep sort of wrapping things up for years to come if it wants to, I guess. As long as it means we keep getting new episodes.
The Season 5 teaser clip is less than 30 seconds long and consists of little more than Elba breathing heavily in a dark hallway, but who cares? Luther is back!
Watch for yourselves below:
In other good news, Season 5 will once again be four episodes, rather than the two we got in the crime drama’s fourth outing.
Luther finds himself once again on the hunt for a violent killer, who keeps committing increasingly horrific crimes.
When the moonless shadows of London give birth to a new nightmare, DCI John Luther must once again confront the depths of human depravity. As a series of monstrous killings becomes ever more audacious, Luther and new recruit D.S. Catherine Halliday are confounded by a tangle of leads and misdirection that seems designed to protect an unspeakable horror. But even as the case brings him closer than ever to the nature of true evil, a reluctant Luther must also face the ghosts of his own past. Striding back into the line of fire, he must choose who to protect… and who to sacrifice. Whatever his next move, it will have devastating consequences for those around him — and change John Luther forever.
Patrick Malahide and Michael Smiley will both be back as George Cornelius and Benny ‘Deadhead’ Silver, respectively, but Luther will be getting a new partner this season, in the form of The End of the F***ing World actress Wunmi Mosaku as DS Catherine Halliday. (Sorry, Game of Thrones fans, Rose Leslie’s Emma Lane won’t be back this time around.)
It also looks like another familiar face might be popping up again this year as well. (Possible spoilers, proceed with caution and all that, but consider that line in the synopsis about Luther facing “ghosts of his own past” and you probably have a good idea.)
The four-part series has been filming since early this year, but there’s still no release date yet for Luther Season 5 on either side of the pond. However, both BBC One and BBC America claim the new season is “coming soon,” for what that’s worth.
Fingers crossed that really isn’t that far away.
Are you excited about Luther’s impending return? What do you want to see in the new season? Let’s discuss.
