'Peaky Blinders' Season 6 Trailer Marks the End of an Era

The BBC released the first trailer for the final season of Peaky Blinders, which promises a dark, chaotic end to the popular period gangster series.

Set in Birmingham, England in the aftermath of World War I, the story follows the exploits of Tommy Shelby and his family, leaders of the infamous gang known as the Peaky Blinders. (Though the Shelbys are fictional, the gang they are a part of did exist during the 1890s, even if the real group never gained nearly as much power or influence as Tommy and his brothers wield.) As we head into the final season, the Peaky Blinders are reeling from a failed assassination attempt against fascist leader Oswald Mosley which has left several key players injured or dead, an event which may well have been caused by one of their own turning traitor.

Though this clip is fairly brief, it's also not messing around. Dark both literally and figuratively, it promises that Season 6 may well be something of a grisly end to the dramatic story we've been watching build for five seasons now.

"One last deal to be done, then we Peaky Blinders can rest," Tommy's voice dramatically intones over shots that include glimpses of burning buildings, gunfire, and both Nazi and Blackshirts rallies.

The trailer reveals that both Tom Hardy and Anya Taylor-Joy are back for this final run of episodes, alongside the major cast that includes Cillian Murphy, Paul Anderson, Finn Cole, Sophie Rundle, and Stephen Graham.

Eagle-eyed viewers will also notice immediately that this clip doesn't include any footage of Helen McCrory's Aunt Polly Gray. It's as yet unknown if the actress, who tragically passed away early in 2021, will appear in this final season in any capacity. But many fans are likely hoping the show finds some way to give the character something like a happy ending, rather than simply killing her off to spark further conflict between her son and her nephew. (Personally, I want to believe Polly retires to her now dead fiance Aberama's farm to raise horses or something and Tommy just namedrops her occasionally while she lives her best life.)

Though Season 6 will mark the official conclusion of Peaky Blinders as a television series, it won't be the last time we see the Shelby family. A feature film is in the works, though it's not entirely clear yet whether this project will be a Downton Abbey movie-style theatrical release or simply a straight-to-Netflix wrap-up project remains to be seen, but this is reportedly meant to serve as the conclusion to the series' story.

"Peaky is back and with a bang,” creator Steven Knight said in a statement released when it was announced that this season would be the show's last. “After the enforced production delay due to the COVID pandemic, we find the family in extreme jeopardy and the stakes have never been higher. We believe this will be the best series of all and are sure that our amazing fans will love it. While the TV series will be coming to an end, the story will continue in another form.”

There's no premiere date as yet for Season 6 on either side of the pond, but you can currently stream Seasons 1-5 on Netflix.
