Good news, Doc Martin fans! After months of speculation and discussion about the future of the show, filming has officially started on the next season.

ITV announced that star Martin Clunes and the rest of the Doc Martin crew have returned to Cornwall to start production on Season 8. The real-life town of Port Isaac stands in for the fictional village of Portwenn, and watching the series film has become something of a pastime there for locals and visitors alike.

“I’m thrilled to be back on the beautiful North Cornish coast to shoot series eight of Doc Martin, “ Clunes said in the official press release. “The Doc is as obstinate as ever, but he is trying his best to be a better husband and father.”

The rest of the series’ main cast is also returning, including Caroline Catz as Martin’s long-suffering love interest Louisa, Dame Eileen Atkins as Martin’s formidable Aunt Ruth, Ian McNeice as Bert Large and Joe Absolom as his son Al.

There’s not a lot of information out there yet on what we could expect to see in the new episodes, but the series’ filming announcement provided a few tidbits about various plot lines. Bert is struggling to make his home-distilled whisky successful, but not too many people are willing to buy. Meanwhile, guests are not exactly flocking to Al’s bed and breakfast, and he fears he may have to close the doors for good.

PC Joe Penhale (John Marquez) is looking forward to a life of married bliss with Martin’s nanny Janice Bone (Robyn Addison) after asking her to marry him last season. But will they make it to the altar? And Martin’s receptionist Morwenna (Jessica Ransom) gets some devastating news when her parents return to Portwenn unexpectedly.

We already know that Season 8 will serve as the penultimate season of Doc Martin. After filming on this season is completed later this summer, the new episodes will screen this fall on British television. It’ll premiere on U.S. public televisions at some point in early 2018.  The series’ ninth and final season will likely film in 2019, with airdates to be determined later.
