Epic New 'Les Miserables' Adaptation Gets a U.S. Airdate
The BBC’s lavish new adaptation of Victor Hugo’s classic novel Les Miserables is coming to America next year on PBS’ Masterpiece, and we finally know the series' official premiere date.
The six-part series kicks off on Sunday, April 14, so get out those 2019 calendars and draw a circle around that day now.
Masterpiece even announced the premiere with an adorable save the date Twitter graphic done up with character shots and the colors of the French flag.

This new take on an old story features an all-star cast that includes Dominic West as Jean Valjean, David Oyelowo as Inspector Javert, Lily Collins as Fantine, Josh O’Connor as Marius, Olivia Colman as Madame Thenardier, Ellie Bamber as Cosette and lots more.
It’s also – in case you were curious – very definitely not a musical. Instead, this version of Les Miserables will hew much more closely to Hugo’s original novel. So get ready to watch a bunch more battles, delve even further into Fantine’s tragic life, and wonder how come you didn’t know that Cosette was actually awesome all along. (Also, if you’re a big Eponine fan, prepare for disappointment – the novel version of her character is much less sympathetic and compelling than the stage depiction.)
If you’re curious about what this new series looks like, the first trailer dropped at the beginning of December and is as sweeping and emotional as you could hope for. The countdown to April is on.
