The Countdown is On: First 'Sherlock' Series 3 Still Released and Press Release Details

Now that we're inching ever closer to the highly anticipated third season of Sherlock, it's finally time for some Series 3 goodies to start being released. Which, for fans who've spent the better part of two years in the desert, is basically better than Christmas (I myself fall firmly in this category).

So, rejoice Sherlockians! While there's still no official UK airdate to go with the show's January 19 US premiere date, the BBC has released the first official photo from Series 3, along with a press release to prove this whole thing isn't some kind of shared fever dream we're all having.

Get your first look at stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in action (sort of) below and start preparing yourself and your feelings for the utter devastation and emotional angst that’s basically lying in wait for us all. If this picture is anything to go by, tonally. Just guessing.

Poor Sherlock! Poor John! Everyone is sad and lonely! Please, Jim, will you fix it for me?

(Is it tacky to also mention what a relief it is that John does not have a mustache in this picture?)

The BBC has also released the first press release for Series 3:

The question on everyone's lips will finally be answered when Sherlock returns with three brand-new action-packed adventures. How did he do it? And how will John take the news that his best friend faked his own death? What will Sherlock think when he finds out John has fallen in love with Mary Morstan? She's sensible, quick-witted and not at all taken in by Sherlock's posturing. Once again, the game is on for Sherlock and John in the first episode of the new series, The Empty Hearse written by Mark Gatiss.

Speaking about the return of the series, executive producer, writer and co-creator Steven Moffat said: "It's been a long time since Sherlock Holmes jumped off that roof - it's time to reveal the truth about what happened between him and the pavement."

Executive producer, writer and co-creator Gatiss added: “Sherlock and John Watson are back at last! And they're just where we want them - on the streets of London having mad, thrilling adventures."

Ugh, seriously, is it January yet? Who else is counting down the days?
