Exciting news for Poldark fans – we have a Season 3 premiere date!

In less exciting news for Poldark fans, that premiere date is not as soon as any of us might have wanted. Season 3 of the popular period drama will air on PBS this Fall, beginning October 1

Here’s the word straight from the source – or in this case, the Masterpiece Twitter account.

The period drama’s third season will screen in the UK this June. This is an interesting move – last year, Season 2 aired in September, and American audiences were only a few weeks behind their British friends. Not so much this time, which will probably come as disappointing news for many fans.  Season 3 will move to the summer in England, which seems like an obvious attempt to get Poldark out of the way of the next season of Victoria. The Jenna Coleman-led drama regularly trounced it in the ratings last Fall and is expected to air its second season in roughly the same slot. (In the UK, the two period dramas air on competing networks and were scheduled head to head. In the US, at least we don’t have this problem!)

As for the content of Season 3, well, we don’t know too much yet. This season will likely be based on the next two installments of Winston Graham’s series of novels, The Black Moon and The Four Swans. Stars Aidan Turner and Eleanor Tomlinson will both be back, along with Heida Reed, Jack Farthing, Ruby Bentall, Luke Norris and Gabriella Wilde. A slew of new cast members will be coming aboard, including Christian Brassington as the vicar Osbourne Whitworth, along with Harry Richardson and Tom York as Demelza’s brothes, Drake and Sam. These new additions makes a certain amount of sense, as the ending of Season 2 wrapped up several major storylines and the show will need to kick off new ones.

You can get a super quick look at Season 3 in this brief teaser clip, which was released following the Season 2 finale.
