'Call the Midwife' Recap: Season 8, Episode 1

Welcome back to another season of Call the Midwife. Once again I'll be recapping the events and emotions stirred by the next eight episodes of Season 8. If you need to refresh your memory about what happened during the Call the Midwife special that aired at Christmas, you can take a glance at it right here.

To begin, let's set the scene. We return to Poplar in 1964. It's spring, a time for new attitudes, a bit of sprucing up and lots and lots of babies!

Happy Christmas! If you're reading this, you must have just recently watched the latest Call the Midwife holiday special, most likely while enjoying a lovely cuppa with a delicious mince pie or piece of snowman cake. Our friends from Poplar encountered adversity this Christmas season, but kindness and joy outweighed the sorrow.

This holiday season, the Nonnatus Sisters returned to the Mother House to choose a new spiritual leader, care for some newly arrived orphans and help a former resident reunite with her only living family. Meanwhile Trixie came back to Poplar, fashionable as ever and ready to care for her patients better than any hospital. Read on for the rest of the details...

Though we’re still a few months from the return of popular period drama Call the Midwife, filming on its upcoming season has been underway since May.

The drama was renewed through Season 9 back when it was only airing Season 6, so we haven’t – and won’t – need to worry about its fate for some time. (It honestly feels like a show that could go for as long as they can keep updating the cast every few years.)
