Filming has kicked off on the highly anticipated feature film adaptation of period drama Downton Abbey.

Yes, it’s really happening. After all the rumors, false starts, and fervent fan hoping, production is under way, the movie was officially confirmed back in July. The major players we all know and love were confirmed to be returning, including Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery and, of course, the indomitable Dame Maggie Smith. And now, principle photography on Downton: The Movie (which still doesn't have an actual title yet)

 is officially under way.

Stories of real-life queens are all the rage right now. From modern day period drama The Crown to more historical fare such as VictoriaThe White Princess and upcoming Starz drama The Spanish Princess, we just can’t seem to get enough of the girls who run the world.

The next big thing headed our way is a feature film adaptation of one of history’s greatest rivalries: Mary Stuart, the Queen of Scots and her cousin, Elizabeth Tudor, the Queen of England.

Indie director Yorgos Lanthimos – the man behind critical darlings The Lobster and The Killing of the Sacred Deer – is bringing his talents to the period drama genre with upcoming film The Favourite.

The movie – which upon first glance seems a bit like the English spiritual cousin of Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette – follows the story of two cousins jockeying for positions and favor at the court of Queen Anne in early 18th century England. The first trailer for the upcoming film dropped this week - and, honestly, it looks fantastic.
