Channel 4 has revealed the first trailer for its upcoming lavish ten-part period drama Indian Summers, which aims to tell the story of the final years of British colonial rule in India.

Following an assassination attempt at the Royal Club in Simla stories of promises, secrets, politics, power, sex and love play out as the British Raj begins to falter and a nation opens its eyes to the possibilities of freedom.

Two-time Academy Award nominee Julie Walters leads a massive, all-star star cast that includes such recognizable  Harry Potter’s Henry-Lloyd Hughes, The Borgias Jemima West, Bedlam’s Nikesh Patel, Lilette Dubey, Mr. Selfridge’s Alexander Cobb, Craig Parkinson, Fiona Glascott and many more.

Walters was most recently seen on PBS as Mistress Quickly in Shakespeare series The Hollow Crown and in films such as Effie Gray and Paddington.

It does have something of a The Jewel in the Crown crossed with Downton Abbey kind of feel, if this clip is anything to go by, so I am soooo here for this.

Indian Summers is slated to air this January on Channel 4 in the UK and will screen on Masterpiece in the US later in 2015.

  • Period Drama ‘Indian Summers’ Will Return for a Second Season

    Did you love the first season of period drama Indian Summers? Then you’ll be pleased to know that the show has been renewed for a second season

    Season 2 will be comprised of ten episodes and will be set in 1935, three years after the events of the first season. 

    “Our story moves forward three years, to a Viceroy’s last summer, a political gamble to stifle Independence and a great reckoning for Ralph, Alice and Aafrin” said Paul Rutman, creator of the series.

  • PBS Previews ‘Indian Summers’, Premiering on Masterpiece in September

    Lavish period drama Indian Summers begins on Masterpiece this September. The nine-part stars the always amazing Julie Walters as the glamorous doyenne of a group of English socialites living in India in 1932 during the time of the British Raj.

    The series has something of a Downton Abbey meets Jewel in the Crown vibe – the promos indicate that there are plenty of class issues, ill-advised romantic entanglements, beautiful sets and incredibly gorgeous costumes to go around.

    PBS has released a new trailer that not only features Walters at her sort of overdramatic, fabulous best, but also adds in a bit more context than some of the initial British promos – you know for those of us who aren’t quite as familiar with this time period and/or location in history.
