‘Sherlock’ Special Gets an Airdate and Episode Title
The Victorian-themed installment of the detective drama will be titled The Abominable Bride and will air on January 1, 2016 at 9pm on Masterpiece.
This will mark the first time ever that US fans will get to see the new episode on the same day as the folks in the UK. (Accounting of course for time differences and such, so the same as with Doctor Who on BBC America these days.) It will also be our first bit of new Sherlock in two years. (Series 3 aired in January of 2014.) Start your countdown clocks now!
The 90-minute special will also be screened in cinemas, presumably much like the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special was a few years ago. No details yet on US theaters or ticket sales, but hopefully that will be forthcoming in the next few weeks.

We still don’t know much about why The Abominable Bride is set in the Victorian era. (I’m personally not a huge fan of this twist, but I’m willing to be convinced that I’m wrong about it.)
Creator Steven Moffat has insisted that this episode is its own special brand of one-off, and will basically exist independently of the highly anticipated fourth season, which is currently set to begin filming in early 2016.
“The special is its own thing,” Moffat told Entertainment Weekly back in March. We wouldn’t have done the story we’re doing, and the way we’re doing it, if we didn’t have this special. It’s not part of the run of three episodes.”
So, who knows? Maybe if we’re lucky we’ll get a modern-day post credits sequence? Who can say?
But, in the mean time, we’re perilously close now to finally seeing Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman back on our screens again, and that is always a good thing.
