Luther star Ruth Wilson will return to Masterpiece in a very personal sort of three-part drama – one based on her own grandmother’s memoir about her life and their complicated family history.

Set in 1940s and 1960s London and 1930s India, the series follows Alison Wilson, who thinks she is happily married until her husband, Alec, dies and a woman turns up on the doorstep claiming that she is the real Mrs. Wilson. Alison is determined to prove the validity of her own marriage – and Alec’s love for her – but is instead led into a world of disturbing secrets.

“I am so excited to bring to the small screen the extraordinary lives of my grandparents,” Wilson said in a statement. “Theirs is a profoundly moving story.”

Masterpiece fans will likely remember Wilson best for her starring role alongside Toby Stephens in the 2007 adaptation of Jane Eyre. Her tbreakout came turn opposite Idris Elba as Luther’s villainous Alice, and she’s won a Golden Globe for her work on Showtime drama The Affair.

Several other Masterpiece favorites will appear alongside Wilson. Iain Glenn (Game of Thrones, Downton Abbey) will play Alec, Alison's husband. He was a spy and secret service officer during World War I, who moved to India, became a professor and wrote several spy novels.

The Durrells in Corfu star Keeley Hawes plays Alex, one of the other women in Alec’s life. Anupham Kher (Silver Linings Playbook) and Fiona Shaw (Killing Eve).

“What a fabulous group of actors to bring Ruth Wilson’s grandmother’s story to life!” said Masterpiece Executive Producer Rebecca Eaton.

Filming on Mrs. Wilson began in April in Northern Ireland and London. No word on a release date on either side of the pond as yet, but it seems unlikely we’d see this project before the end of the year. Hope springs eternal, however; so, fingers crossed!
