The third season of popular period drama Mr. Selfridge is about to kick off here in the US beginning March 29, but a bit of extra good news for fans has arrived just in time to celebrate the show’s return.

It’s official: ITV has already renewed the drama for a fourth season!

Star Jeremy Piven will once again reprise his role as the colorful but deeply troubled entrepreneur Harry Selfridge. Katherine Kelly will be back as everyone’s favorite socialite Lady Mae Loxley, and several other series regulars will also be returning for another season, including Sherlock’s Amanda Abbington (Miss Mardle),  Tom Goodman-Hill (Mr. Grove), Ron Cook (Mr. Crabb), Amy Beth-Hayes (Kitty), Trystan Gravelle (Victor), Sacha Parkinson (Connie) and Samuel West (Mr. Edwards).

The fourth season will once again be comprised of ten episodes – though if history is any guide they’ll be combined into eight once it airs in America – and apparently is set to focus on Selfridge’s dramatic fall as he loses hold on his empire and the social status he has worked so hard to create.

“We’re delighted to commission a fourth series of Mr. Selfridge,” said ITV Director of Drama Steve November.  “It’s so pleasing to see the audience take the characters and storylines into their hearts.  We’re looking forward to seeing Jeremy reprise his role as the visionary yet deeply troubled Harry alongside simply stunning production values”.

A handful of new faces are also already scheduled to pop up in Season 4: Line of Duty’s Sacha Dhawan will be playing “a major new character” and two new guest roles have been awarded to newcomers Lottie Tolhurst and Mimi Ndiweni.

"This [season] marks a dramatic turn in fortunes for Harry as he loses grip on his empire,” said Kate Lewis, executive producer for ITV Studios. “It’s a bit of a game changer for all the characters in the series.”

Series creator Andrew Davies once said in an interview that he’d “always conceived” Mr. Selfridge with a four-season run in mind.  Does this mean that this could be Selfridge’s final bow? We’ll have to wait and see, since no one official has mentioned anything about that yet. (But something to ponder, maybe?)

In the meantime, my fellow Americans get ready for the start of Season 3 by watching a preview for the new series – or refresh your memory about what happened last season by visiting our episode recaps.

Are you excited at the prospect of more Mr. Selfridge? Looking forward to the start of Season 3 here in the States? Let us know in the comments.
