Season 2 of Miss Scarlet and the Duke just ended and Season 3 is still a few weeks away (unless you're a PBS Passport member who decided to take the opportunity to watch the new episodes early), but fans of the popular mystery series can rest easy in the knowledge that the adventures of Eliza Scarlet and William Wellington are far from over. Masterpiece has announced that the series will return for a fourth season.

The Season 4 renewal news comes just days after the announcement that the series' third season was available early for PBS Passport members and subscribers to the Amazon Prime Masterpiece channel (although episodes are only being released weekly on the latter.) Miss Scarlet fans are living their best lives right now, is what I'm saying.

Given that we barely know anything about Season 3 yet, there's no word on what we might expect in any future fourth installment. But, since the series' third season looks pretty set to pick up where its second left off, it seems safe to say the same will be true once this particular outing reaches its conclusion.

Stars Kate Phillips and Stuart Martin will obviously be back as our titular leading duo, and there's every reason to assume that fan favorites like Ansu Kabia and Cathy Belton will also return. (And, much as it pains me to admit it, Felix Scott's Patrick Nash seems in this story for the long haul at present so unless something tragic happens next season I expect he's back as well.)

"I think what the fans will enjoy most of all is really observing the strength of Eliza and Duke’s relationship through everything that goes on over the course of Season 3. There’s a lot of obstacles that come their way," Philips tells Masterpiece when asked about what to expect in the series' third season. "You discover a lot more. You see a lot more of Eliza’s vulnerability. A couple of characters come on the scene that really test her emotional stability. And whilst you are so used to seeing this really strong woman who’s not prepared to look at her emotions…there’s some stuff [with William] where you see her a lot more vulnerable."

"There’s maybe a little bit more comedy, maybe a little bit more energy and pace to Season 3," series creator Rachael New adds. "So I would say it’s more of the same, but we are delving a bit deeper into our characters and understanding them on a slightly different, deeper level."

Production on Season 4 is currently underway in Serbia. Miss Scarlet and the Duke Season 3 will premiere on Masterpiece on Sunday, January 8 at 8 pm ET ahead of the brand new season of All Creatures Great and Small. It's currently available to binge-watch on PBS Passport and as a weekly release on the Amazon Prime Masterpiece Channel.
