'Killing Eve' Renewed for Season 4

BBC America's buzzy female assassin drama Killing Eve has been given an early Season 4 renewal ahead of its return for a third season later this year.

The series will now run into 2021, with 2018 Emmy winner Jodie Comer as serial assassin Villanelle and 2018 Golden Globe winner Sandra Oh as MI-5 agent Eve Polastri both returning. The already greenlit Season 3 will premiere in at some as yet to be determined point  spring, as Suzanne Heathcote takes over from Emerald Fennell as the lead writer. Phoebe Waller-Bridge penned Killing Eve's first season, and a new female lead writer will take over in the series' fourth. (This is an interesting - and unconventional - tradition, to be sure, but one that seems to be largely working for the show thus far, if ratings and fan reaction are anything to go by.)

“How could we not have massive confidence in Killing Eve? It has won big in every major award show and is the highest growing show on U.S. television for six years,” said Sarah Barnett, President, AMC Networks Entertainment Group and AMC Studios.

“The reason for this series’ emphatic embrace is the brilliant women who breathed it into being: Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Emerald Fennell, Sandra Oh, Jodie Comer, Fiona Shaw and its fairy godmother, executive producer Sally Woodward Gentle. Season 3 lead writer Suzanne Heathcote takes Eve, Villanelle and Carolyn to places more thrilling, twisted and surprising than ever. Our addicted fans will not be disappointed.”

To be fair, it's not entirely clear how precisely Killing Eve will keep up its wild cat-and-mouse tension through a fourth season.

After all, we've only had two so far, and both Eve and Villanelle have each already been shot/stabbed and left for dead by the other. It's hard to imagine what sort of story the two might have that could fill two more seasons' of episodes. But it's equally impossible to imagine Killing Eve without either of its stars, therefore it's unlikely either will be departing any time soon. So, I guess we'll have to see?

Season 3, will, however, see the addition of at least nine new cast members, including Gemma Whelan, Dame Harriet Walter and Danny Sapani, among others. So perhaps the series' plan is to merely broaden its narrative world and tell stories that involve something other than just our two leads. Might we finally find out more about Fiona Shaw's mysterious handler Carolyn? (This is a thing on my personal wishlist.)

Are you looking forward to even more Killing Eve? What do you think two seasons' worth of story might have in store? Let's discuss.
