'His Dark Materials' Season 2 Will Journey to New Worlds This November

HBO's lavish adaptation of His Dark Materials will officially return for its second season this November.

Based on the bestselling series from author Philip Pullman, Season 1 of the show introduced us to a Victorian alternate reality ruled by a theocratic group known as The Magisterium, powered by a mysterious substance called Dust, and full of creatures known as Daemons, human souls in adorable animal form that exist in tandem with their human halves.

The story follows a young girl named Lyra (Dafne Keene), whose search for a kidnapped friend leads her to discover a dangerous plot involving stolen children and dark experiments centered on Dust and the connection between humans and daemons. The Season 1 finale saw a distraught Lyra step through a portal into an entirely new world, chasing after her deadbeat father, Lord Asriel.

Season 2 will premiere on Monday, November 16 on both HBO and HBO Max.

Season 2 will adapt the second novel in Pullman's trilogy, titled The Subtle Knife.  In it, Lyra will meet a boy named Will Parry (Amir Wilson), who happens to be a dimensional traveler from our world and who is also on the run from a troubled past. Much as Lyra's destiny is tied to the Golden Compass she received last season, Will's is tied to the Subtle Knife, an artifact that can cut holes between worlds. Their journey will send them on a search for Will's missing father, John Parry, who is played by Sherlock fan favorite Andrew Scott and whose character was only referenced in photos last year. Meanwhile, Ruth Wilson's villainous and unstable Mrs. Coulter searches for Lyra, determined to bring her back at any cost.

Watch the full trailer for the new season below, which promises a full-on hunt for Lyra and Will across multiple worlds.

The second season will run just seven episodes rather than last season's eight, but only because production on the eighth and final hour - supposedly a bottle episode that bridges Seasons 2 and 3 and features James McAvoy's character Lord Asriel who technically doesn't appear in the second novel - wasn't completed. Rumor has it the hour will hopefully be completed and aired at a later date.

A third season of His Dark Materials has yet to be ordered, but according to a report in Deadline, the team behind the show are hopeful and already prepping scripts for a potential Season 3. Apparently, the hope is to split the rather substantial third novel, The Amber Spyglass, into two seasons. Fingers crossed, I say.
