ITV has released the first full trailer for its splashy upcoming period drama Victoria, to what is undoubtedly the delight of costume drama fans everywhere.

Doctor Who’s Jenna Coleman stars as the titular queen, in her first major role since departing the TARDIS last year. And if this clip is anything to go by – it seems like it’s probably going to turn out to be a pretty smart career move for her, because Victoria looks great.

The eight-episode series follows Victoria’s early life, from her ascension to the throne at the young age of 18, through to her courtship and marriage to Prince Albert. And it’s highly likely that the show’s creative team is already plotting how to continue this series through the rest of Victoria’s multi-decade reign, in future seasons. She was on the throne for 63 years, after all.

The drama’s massive cast features such heavy hitters as Rufus Sewell, Eve Myles, Peter Firth, Tom Hughes, Paul Rhys, Catherine Flemming and lots more.

The new trailer shows Victoria learning of the King's death and being confronted with the daunting prospect of becoming Queen. It also features what looks to be a headed confrontation between Victoria and her first Prime Minister, Lord Melbourne, and a sort of running reference to Victoria’s diminutive stature – she was only 4’11”!

Victoria will bow this Fall on ITV in the UK, and will premiere in America in January 2017, inheriting the timeslot once dominated by another popular British period drama – Downton Abbey.
