'The Fall's' Jamie Dornan to Star in 'The Tourist' for HBO Max
Actor Jamie Dornan has signed on to play a lead role in the upcoming HBO Max thriller The Tourist. The six-episode series comes from Two Brothers Pictures, the production company behind the hit series Fleabag.
The Tourist follows the story of a British man who finds himself in the glowing red heart of the Australian outback, being pursued by a vast tanker truck that's trying to drive him off the road. An epic cat-and-mouse chase unfolds, and the man later wakes in the hospital, hurt, but somehow alive. Except he has no idea who he is. With merciless figures from his past pursuing him, The Man’s search for answers propels him through the vast and unforgiving outback.
Now, I know I can't be the only person who read this description and immediately thought this series must be the spiritual cousin to 1971 Steven Spielberg film Duel, can I? (That was a formative film for me as a child, inasmuch as tractor-trailers still make me feel vaguely uneasy while driving to this day.
Dornan, who will play the mysterious Man, is probably best known to American audiences for his role as Christian Grey in the film adaptation of the bestselling Fifty Shades of Grey novels. He also played serial killer Paul Spector in the grisly Netflix crime drama The Fall and briefly appeared as The Huntsman in the ABC fairytale drama Once Upon a Time.
“The Tourist are some of the most exciting scripts I’ve ever read," Dornan said in a statement. "I can’t wait to go to Australia with such a talented group of people."
Other notable cast members include Dumplin's Danielle Macdonald as Helen Chambers, a fledgling Probationary Constable, Line of Duty's Shalom Brunme-Franklin is set to play Luci, a waitress who’s swept into The Man’s journey for answers. And Lord of the Rings star Hugo Weaving plays Agent Lachlan Rogers, one of the most highly regarded detective inspectors in Australia, leading Major Crime for the state police.
There's no word yet on when we might expect to see a premiere on either side of the pond, but we'll keep you posted as we learn more.
