'Face-to-Face' Remake 'Suspect' Season 2 Brings Aboard New Cast
Making a hit television show is not an easy task, even when one is in possession of all the ingredients. A great cast, a concept that's already road-tested, scripts that already work, a production studio full of people who are experienced in what sells and how to market it, all these things seem like they should add up to a winning formula. However, for Eagle Eye Drama, the struggle has been real. Run by former Channel 4 commissioning editor Walter Iuzzolino, the man whose name graces Walter Presents, it takes the biggest foreign language hits the anthology series airs and remakes them, almost beat for beat, in English with U.K. actors. By rights, it should work: The show is already a hit, it has name recognition to cut through the clutter, a built-in fan base, and since most PBS Passports already stream Walter Presents for members, an almost guaranteed American partner to air them.
And yet, as the reviews have shown, none of them are ever as good as the original, and in these streaming times, remaking these hits in English is unnecessary. So far, only Professor T, which already had been remade in multiple languages before Eagle Eye got to it, has managed to find its footing, and that still took two seasons. However, if at first you don't succeed, try, try again, and that;'s exactly what the company is doing with Suspect, the poorly named remake of the very popular Danish series Forhøret (Face to Face). Unlike all the other Eagle Eye Drama series, Suspect is not a PBS series; it's streaming over on BritBox. And for Season 2, not only is it bringing aboard a brand new cast, but replacing just about everyone behind the camera as well.
It helps that Face to Face is a semi-anthology series, the concept of which is that the central character goes through a roster of eight suspects and interviews them "face to face." Season 1 focuses on Bjørn (Ulrich Thomsen), renamed Danny for the English version and played by James Nesbitt. Season 2 focuses on his estranged wife, Susanne Egholm (Trine Dyrholm), who is introduced at the end of Season 1. In the English language version, her name is Susannah, and she's played by Ann-Marie Duff.
Here’s the synopsis for Season 2, which follows the same plot as Face to Face Season 2:
Dr Susannah Newman is on a desperate quest to track down a self-confessed serial killer before he kills again that night. When a mysterious new client Jon admits under hypnosis that he is a murderer and intends on killing another young female that evening, Susannah knows he must be stopped at all costs.
Duff is the only returning character from Season 1. She will be joined by Dominic Cooper (The Gold) as Jon, the confessed serial killer. The rest of the cast includes Vinette Robinson (The Lazarus Project), Eddie Marsan (The Thief, His Wife, and the Canoe), Celine Buckens (Showtrial), Nicholas Pinnock (Top Boy), Gina McKee (Bodyguard), and Tamsin Greig (Belgravia). Matt Baker (Hotel Portofino), who wrote Season 1, is out, replaced by Joy Wilkinson (The Pact) and David Allison (Marcella). Likewise, director Dries Vos (The Couple Next Door) has exited, with Carolina Giammetta (The Drowning) helming all eight episodes this time around.
Eagle Eye’s Jo McGrath and Walter Iuzzolino are the executive producers, and Dylan Rees is the series producer. Reemah Sakaan and Stephen Nye are the executive producers for Britbox International.
Suspect Season 2 is expected out in 2024.
