'Good Omens' Season 2 Officially Finishes Filming

Admittedly, when it was announced that a second season of Good Omens would be coming to Prime Video, fans were rightly a bit perplexed. (Over the moon, likely, but perplexed all the same.) Because the first season of the series, based on the beloved Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett novel of the same name, had kind of exhausted all the source material. The Anti-Christ was contained, the apocalypse averted, and everyone goes home happy, right?

But, since the lead characters are immortal and the series was a fairly decent hit for Amazon, it probably shouldn't surprise us that the folks in charge wanted to continue the adventures of bookish angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and his celestial life partner, the snarky demon Crowley (David Tennant). And Gaiman himself has long said that he and his late co-author Pratchett had discussed at some length what a sequel in this universe might look like. (Some of those ideas were incorporated into Season 1, in fact, such as the existence of Aziraphale's heavenly boss, the officious Archangel Gabriel.)

What that all means, obviously, is anyone's guess, and at the moment all we know about Season 2 is that it will apparently find Aziraphale and Crowley still happily living amongst the mortals they both find so interesting in London's SoHo neighborhood when an unexpected messenger presents a surprising mystery.

But, thankfully, we're one step closer to finding out. According to series director and co-showrunner Douglas Mackinnon, filming on Season 2 is officially complete.

The news was subsequently confirmed by the U.K. Prime Video account, though naturally, no one was terribly eager to give us more details about what to expect in this continuation, even if there is an adorable behind-the-scenes photo attached.

Filming has been taking place in Scotland since November 2021.

Basically, it appears as though Prime Video is counting on the great chemistry between real-life friends Sheen and Tennant to carry the day (and our viewing interest) no matter what the second season's story might happen to be, and I can't say as I blame them. Give the people what they want. To the world and all that.

The series' two leads aren't the only familiar faces returning for another season. Jon Hamm (Mad Men) is back as the aforementioned Gabriel, along with Derek Jacobi (Last Tango in Halifax) as the Metatron. Season 1 stars Mark Gatiss (Sherlock), Miranda Richardson (And Then There Were None), Steve Pemberton (Killing Eve), Reece Shearsmith (Inside No. 9), Niamh Walsh (Jamestown), Doon Mackichan (Two Doors Down), Gloria Obiyano (Dune), Maggie Service (London Road), Nina Sosanya (His Dark Materials), Liz Carr, Quelin Sepulveda, and Shelley Conn are all also returning.

New faces include Tim Downie (Outlander), Pete Firman (The Magicians), Andi Osho (I May Destroy You), and Alex Norton (Pirates of the Caribbean). But, sadly, according to Deadline, God and the Devil will be noticeably absent in Season 2, as the voice talents both Frances McDormand and Benedict Cumberbatch are apparently not taking part.

There's no official release date for Good Omens Season 2, but if we're lucky maybe we'll get to see it in time for Christmas. Season 1 is currently streaming on Prime Video.
