Good news for fans of author Deborah Harkness – the television adaptation of her A Discovery of Witches series has already been renewed for both Seasons 2 and 3!
The first season of the fantasy drama – which follows the story of a forbideen romance between a vampire and a witch, among other things – hasn’t aired in America yet, but Harkness’ All Souls Trilogy are best sellers here in the states. (And Season 1 appeared to be quite the hit for U.K. network Sky across the pond.)
Following the conclusion of the series’ first season, Sky announced that A Discovery of Witches would not only be back for Season 2, but also greenlit Season 3 at the same time.
MAGICAL NEWS: We're absolutely thrilled to announce @ADiscoveryOfWTV Series 2 AND 3 have both been confirmed!! So t here'll be plenty more of THIS to look forward to. #ADiscoveryOfWitches @teresapalmer #MatthewGoode @DebHarkness pic.twitter.com/y4M0b9tDX8— Sky One (@SkyOne) November 2, 2018
“The enormous success of the show in the UK and Europe has made it possible for future seasons to be greenlit and go into production,” Harkness wrote in a post on her Facebook page. “The writers are already hard at work to produce scripts so that we can cast and shoot season 2 next year. Elizabethan London, here we come!”
Season 1 will officially premiere in the U.S. beginning January 17, 2019 on streaming services Sundance Now and Shudder. (There are deals in place for terrestrial broadcast on cable network the Sundance Channel, but that won’t happen until the exclusive streaming window for the series has closed. Which might be a while.)
Starring Matthew Goode and Teresa Palmer, A Discovery of Witches follows the story of an Oxford professor – who’s also a vampire – and a student, who happens to be a witch descended from the women of Salem. The two find themselves involved in a forbidden love and trapped on the cusp of interspecies magical war.
