First Image From 'Miss Fisher & The Crypt Of Tears' Released
Miss Fisher and The Crypt of Tears begins filming, as new cast members are announced for the upcoming big screen adaptation of the popular mystery series.
Last spring, Every Cloud Productions made it official: The Miss Fisher movie was a go, and filming would begin in October of 2018. Everything seems to be on track. The film's new website says "Now In Production." And this week, the company posted a lengthy update to the Every Cloud Productions site, announcing new cast members who will be joining the film, as well as releasing the movie's first image to the public (above), taken while filming in Morocco.
British actor Rupert Penry-Jones (Spooks, Silk) and Australian actors Daniel Lapaine (Zero Dark Thirty) and Jacqueline McKenzie (The Water Diviner) have joined the cast of Miss Fisher & The Crypt of Tears, the feature film based on the international hit television series and best-selling murder mystery books by Kerry Greenwood, which is currently filming in Morocco... The ensemble cast also includes John Stanton (The Dr. Blake Mysteries, Beneath Hill 60), William Zappa (Mad Max 2), Ian Bliss (Matrix Reloaded), Los Angeles-based Egyptian star Kal Naga (Eyes of a Thief) and the film will introduce Australian actress Izabella Yena to the big screen.
Rupert Penry-Jones is credited as part of the Spooks cast (known in the states as MI-5), but fans may also recognize him as DI Joseph Chandler from Whitechapel, as well as his guest-star turn as Lord Thomas Hamilton in STARZ's Black Sails. Daniel Lapaine's most significant credit may be Zero Dark Thirty, but to PBS viewers, he's Hugh Jarvis from Season 2 of The Durrells in Corfu.
As for Jacqueline McKenzie, she's actually best known in the states for playing Diana Skouris in USA's The 4400. William Zappa was recently seen as Graham Cowan in A Place To Call Home. And of course, everyone will recognize John Stanton as Doug Ashby in The Dr. Blake Mysteries. As for Ian Bliss, if you accidentally see him and think he's Hugo Weaving, you're not alone, most of his film appearances including The Matrix Reloaded are due to his uncanny resemblance to the more famous actor.
According to the press release, these three join the rest of the returning cast, which includes all our old favorites.
They join Essie Davis (Game of Thrones) who returns in the eponymous lead role as the glamorous private detective The Hon. Phryne Fisher, Nathan Page as Detective Inspector Jack Robinson, Miriam Margolyes (Harry Potter) as Aunt Prudence, Ashleigh Cummings as the loyal assistant and maid Dorothy ‘Dot’ Collins and Hugo Johnstone-Burt as her adoring husband Constable Hugh Collins. Ashleigh Cummings will be seen in the upcoming international feature The Goldfinch.

In this big-screen Miss Fisher adventure, the exploits of The Hon. Phryne Fisher in 1920s Melbourne, Australia, lead her to murder, mystery and mayhem from London to British Palestine. After freeing a young Bedouin girl (Shirin Abbas) from her unjust imprisonment in Jerusalem, Miss Fisher begins to unravel a decade-old mystery concerning priceless emeralds, ancient curses and the truth behind the suspicious disappearance of Shirin’s forgotten tribe.
Miss Fisher and The Crypt of Tears does not yet have a release date but is expected to arrive at the earliest in the latter half of 2019.
