Masterpiece has released the first US trailer for the upcoming lavish-looking remake of classic period drama Poldark. And – spoiler alert – it looks pretty fantastic. So much dramatic dialogue! Such gorgeous scenery! Plus, the cast doesn’t exactly strain one’s eyes, either, if you know what I mean.

The original Poldark screened on Masterpiece Theater in 1977 and starred Robin Ellis in the title role. It was one of the BBC’s very first costume dramas and was a smash success on both sides of the pond.

This updated version will star The Hobbit trilogy Aidan Turner as Ross Poldark, a brooding British officer returning to Cornwall from the American Revolutionary War in 1793, who finds his home life much changed. He discovers that his father is dead, the family mine is long since closed, his sweetheart is pledged to marry his cousin. So, you know, there’s some drama.

Confession time: I get a little bit swoony about Turner, so I’m super excited for this. I loved him as Kili in The Hobbit movies and everything, but I really really loved him as angsty vampire Mitchell in the sci-fi series Being Human, so I’m pretty excited to watch Ross Poldark suffer a bit. Just saying. (In all seriousness, Turner’s a fantastic actor and absolutely deserves the heartthrob status that is about to come his way.)

Turner is  joined by The White Queen’s Eleanor Tomlinson as Demelza, along with a cast that includes several other recognizable faces, including Blandings’ Jack Farthing, Whitechapel’s Phil DaviesWarren Clarke, Kyle Soller, Heida Reed, Beatie Edney and more. Even Ellis – the original Poldark – will be putting in an appearance, playing the Reverend Halse.

The eight-part series is slated to premiere on Masterpeice this June.

Are you looking forward to seeing an updated version of this classic series? How do you think Turner will fare in the lead role?
