Actors and Actresses

British Actresses You Should Know: Helen McCrory

We all have those actors whose work we’d watch, no matter what it was. Powerful prestige drama? Scary supernatural tale? Super dated period piece? Random episode of some show you’ve never heard of before, just because they have a bit part in it? Check, check and check. We’ve all been there.

British actress Helen McCrory is one of those performers. (At least for me, at any rate.) I will honestly watch this woman do anything, and not feel bad about it for a single second. Luckily, McCrory is not only ridiculously talented, but one of those actors who’s been in the entertainment business long enough to have a rather significant back log of both mainstream and niche sorts of roles. You’d be surprised how many things you’ve probably seen her in without realizing it. Let's talk about a few of them.

The Emmy Spotlight Was Bright on 'Fleabag’s' Phoebe Waller-Bridge

Last night’s 71st annual Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony honored a wide variety of television shows, many with British connections. But the undeniable belle of the ball was Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

The English actress/writer/producer won three statuettes in the comedy category for her Amazon series, Fleabag – Outstanding Writing, Comedy Series and Lead Actress.

British Actors You Should Know: Russell Tovey

This month our Carmen Croghan has chosen to profile one of those British actors that she's been following so long he sort of feels like family.

At just 37, he's tackled stage, film and television and tried his hand at sci-fi, comedy, thrillers, animation and period pieces always with his trademark vulnerablity. And though Russell Tovey might not be a name that you recognize immediately, you’re sure to have seen him (and his signature “sticky-out” ears) in action.

British Actors You Should Know: Taron Egerton

In this installment of British Actors You Should Know, we spotlight Taron Egerton, star of the highly anticipated Elton John musical biopic, Rocketman. A graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art with a golden singing voice, we look back at some of Egerton's earlier work, which includes everything from period dramas and action adventure comedies to voicing a singing primate.

In Memoriam 2018

As 2018 comes to an end, we here at Telly Visions would like to pause to remember some of the performers and public figures we have lost over the past twelve months.

These losses have touched the fields of television, film, literature, music, science and sports. You may not be familiar with all of them, but each was an icon beloved by the British public for the laughter, thrills and enlightenment they provided. They will continue to live on in our memories through the work they left behind.

British Actors You Should Know: Andrew Garfield

In honor of July 4th, that most American of holidays, I thought it would be fitting to feature an actor with strong ties to the States in our British Actors You Should Know series.

Andrew Garfield was born in Los Angeles to an English mother and an American-ish father (the elder Mr. Garfield was born in the US to English parents of Eastern European descent). Garfield's family moved from California to England when he was three years old and he was raised in Epsom, Surrey. He has dual citizenship and, as you are about to see in this sampling of roles, he seems more than comfortable switching from one continent (and accent) to another.

At only 34 years old, Garfield’s career has been impressive in its variety, not only in terms of roles, but also in the range of mediums, be it stage, television or film.
