Good news for those who like period drama - PBS has announced that World War II-set series Home Fires will be part of the Fall Masterpiece lineup this year!

Acclaimed British actresses Francesca Annis (Cranford, Jane Eyre, Wives and Daughers) and Samantha Bond (Downton Abbey, the Pierce Brosnan era of Bond films) lead an impressive ensemble cast that includes Ruth Gemmell, Mark Bonnar, Claire Rushbrook, Mark Bazeley, Frances Grey and Ed Stoppard.

The six-part series follows a group of inspirational women in a rural Cheshire community with the shadow of World War II casting a dark cloud over their lives. The isolated village couldn’t feel further away from the impending bloodshed and battlefields and yet it is not immune from the effects of war.

As the conflict takes hold, and separates the women from their husbands, fathers, sons and brothers, the characters find themselves under increasing and extraordinary pressures in a rapidly fragmenting world.

Sounds interesting, yeah? Check out the ITV trailer below:

The drama was inspired by Julie Summers’ non-fiction book Jambusters, and originally aired in the UK this past April. It’s already been renewed for a second season by ITV so, unlike some recent series we’ve seen that met unfortunately early ends (The Crimson Field springs to mind, for example) we can go into this one knowing it’s okay to get attached.

Home Fires is slated to premiere beginning Sunday, October 4 and will air back-to-back with highly anticipated period drama Indian Summers.

Sound interesting? Let us know!

Lacy's love of British TV is embarrassingly extensive, but primarily centers around evangelizing all things Doctor Who, and watching as many period dramas as possible.

Digital media type by day, she also has a fairly useless degree in British medieval literature, and dearly loves to talk about dream poetry, liminality, and the medieval religious vision. (Sadly, that opportunity presents itself very infrequently.) York apologist, Ninth Doctor enthusiast, and unabashed Ravenclaw. Say hi on Threads or Blue Sky at @LacyMB.
