'Home Fires'' Final Season Comes to Masterpiece This April

The second season of female-led drama Home Fires will finally screen in America this spring! Season 2 will air on PBS’ Masterpiece beginning Sunday, April 2 at 9pm. It’ll be paired with the new season of period drama Call the Midwife. 

The series stars Samantha Bond and Francesa Annis as the leaders of a group of Women’s Institute members in a rural Cheshire community during World War II. Season 2 is set during the summer of 1940 and the village of Great Paxton is caught up in the Battle of Britain. Two weeks after the defeat at Dunkirk, with the German army advancing though France, Britain braces itself for invasion. The women must all rely on each other and their friendships forged in their community to survive what is to come.

Unfortunately, Home Fires was cancelled by British network ITV after its second season. And despite a rather well organized and extremely enthusiastic fan campaign to save it, it looks as though the show is officially done.

And, even more unfortunately – I’m reliably informed that Season 2 ends on a fairly major cliffhanger. So we should probably all start preparing ourselves now that there will likely be some plot threads that don’t necessarily have a satisfying ending.  It’s always a shame when shows don’t get a chance to wrap up their stories on their own terms. But maybe it’s better to know that going in. Forewarned is forearmed, and all that.

  • Period Drama 'Home Fires' Will Live on in Novel Form

    The second season of period drama Home Fires is currently airing on PBS’ Masterpiece. Unfortunately, the series’ second season is also its last, as it was canceled back in 2016 by UK network ITV just after Season 2 aired. As a result of this surprise move, the drama ends on something of a cliffhanger, apparently, and fans in the UK (and likely soon to be the US) were devastated.

    But now the story of Home Fires will finally be continued - in a series of novels that will pick up where the show left off.

  • Period Drama ‘Home Fires’ Canceled by British Network ITV; Fans Rally to Try and Save Show

    Sad news for fans of the female-led period drama Home Fires – the show was recently canceled by British network ITV after just two seasons.

    The series starred Samantha Bond and Francesca Annis as the leaders of a group of Women’s Institute members in a rural Cheshire community during World War II. The second season is set during the summer of 1940, and the village of Great Paxton is caught up in the Battle of Britain. Two weeks after the defeat at Dunkirk, with the German army advancing though France, Britain braces itself for invasion.

    American fans will still be able to watch Home Fires’ six-episode second season when it screens on PBS stations later this year. But, since Season 2 reportedly ends on a fairly major cliffhanger, perhaps it’s best if we all start preparing ourselves to live with the fact that the show is not going to get what we’d probably call a satisfying ending. In the wake of the series' cancellation, however, a group of fans has rallied in an attempt to save the show.

  • World War II Drama ‘Home Fires’ to Get a Second Season

    As you might have seen earlier this year, ITV has recommisisioned World War II drama Home Fires for a second season. (The show originally aired in the UK in the Spring of 2015, so you might be forgiven for missing that announcement back then.)

    Home Fires follows the story of a group of inspirational women in a rural Cheshire community. Led by the forthright and fiery Frances Barden (Downton Abbey’s Samantha Bond) and the authoritative Joyce Cameron (Francesa Annis), the ladies under the auspices of the Great Paxford Women’s Institute discover inner resources that chance their lives forever.

    Through their own strength and resourcefulness, the eclectic band of local women – Frances’s sister Sarah, (Ruth Gemmill), downtrodden neighbour Pat Simms (Claire Rushbrook), pharmacist Erica (Frances Grey), local farmer Steph (Clare Calbraith) bookkeeper Alison (Fenella Woolgar), school teacher Teresa (Leanne Best) and butcher’s wife Miriam (Claire Price) – discover ways of improving the lives of their fellow villagers and offer a support network at a time of impending danger and crisis.
