It is rare for daytime soaps from other countries to find homes in the U.S., unless they are a specific kind of Mexican telenovela shown on U.S. Spanish-speaking networks. That's just one of the reasons the Northern Ireland-set series Hope Street has been such a surprise hit. The daytime series, which airs on BBC NI across the pond, has been a significant success for BritBox, to the point that the first three seasons of the series have been picked up by many local PBS stations and PBS Passports for second run. While PBS viewers wait for Season 4 to arrive from BritBox later in 2025, they can be assured that the series will return next year for Season 5.
Hope Street's surprise success is also notable because, unlike many American daytime soaps, the cast turnover has been massive from the show's first season, with multiple lead characters sticking around for only a single season (such as Season 1's DC Leila Hussain) or reduced to guest roles (like Season 2's DC Al Quinn) after their one season in the sun.
Season 5 is no exception, though fans will be relieved that the turnover this year won't be quite as brutal as the turnover after Season 3, which saw the exit of original co-star Ciarán McMenamin, multiple supporting characters related to his tenure, and even the set the show was using. Season 5 does shed Niall Wright's PC Callum McCarthy, who had been with the series since the beginning, but in his place, it adds two new faces: Jenn Murray (Lewis) and Cameron Cuffe (Nautilus), whose meet-cute will be the talk of the season.
Here is the synopsis for the major storyline of Hope Street Season 5.
Confident and charming, Donal is a well-known local rugby player, whose career was cut short by injury. As the newest member of the Port Devine Police department, Donal has found a new vigour for life and is soon set to make his mark. Meanwhile, Sasha Cookson, a local doctor, has recently taken over her father’s general practice (GP) surgery. Sasha is direct and straight-talking, which rubs some people up the wrong way, but it’s not a problem for Donal.
Even though he’s nursing a recently broken heart, when Donal and Sasha meet, sparks immediately begin to fly – but will one of them get burnt?
Hope Street will bring back the remaining trio of characters who have been with the show since Season 1: Kerri Quinn as Marlene Pettigrew, and Aaron McCusker and Niamh McGrady as Clint and Nicole Devine-Dunwoody. Other returnees who joined the series over the four seasons the show has been on the air include Marcus Onilude (Ted Lasso), Eleanor Methven (Little Women), Paddy Jenkins (Blue Lights), Finnian Garbutt (Housejackers), Katie Shortt (Casualty), Jonny Grogan (The Head), and no-longer-a-newcomer RhéAna Kamalu.
Susanne Farrell and Paul Marquess created the series, with the latter as lead writer. Marquess executive produces with Donna Wiffen for Long Story TV and Robert Schildhouse, Stephen Nye, and Jess O'Riordan for BritBox International. Filmed in and around County Down’s seaside town of Donaghadee, Hope Street celebrates the wealth of local writing, acting, and production talent from Northern Ireland, demonstrating the BBC’s commitment to nurturing homegrown talent and storytelling in its nations and regions.
Hope Street Seasons 1 through 3 are streaming for members on PBS Passport and for subscribers on BritBox. Season 4 is currently exclusive to BritBox, but is expected to debut on PBS Passport before the end of 2025. Hope Street Season 5 does not yet have a premiere date, but is expected to air and stream the first half in late 2025 and the second half in early 2026.
