Watch the Trailer for Masterpiece’s ’The Miniaturist’
Period drama The Miniaturist is set to air this September on Masterpiece and PBS has released an official trailer for the upcoming drama.
Anna Taylor-Joy stars as Nella Oortman, a young girl who marries a wealthy merchant in seventeenth century Amsterdam. Excited to begin her new life, Nella suddenly starts receiving mysterious packages from a maker of miniatures. These tiny objects – made to stock a dollhouse that looks exactly like her new home – may have the ability to predict the future. And that future? Looks increasingly dark.
The three-part series also stars Torchwood’s Alex Hassell, The Hour’s Romola Garai, Emily Berrington, Paapa Essiedu and more.
Up until this point, we haven’t actually seen a proper trailer for The Miniaturist, merely a couple of preview clips courtesy of the BBC last year. Now, we have one, and it’s simultaneously beautiful and creepy.
In addition to making us all really nervous, the clip does a great job of laying out all these characters, their relationship to one another, and the increasingly bizarre situation going on around them, all in a neat two minute-package.

The whole thing sort of looks like a Vermeer painting, and I am definitely here for it.
I have yet to read the popular novel this series is based on, so I don’t know whether or not the Miniaturist’s dollhouse is some kind of magical witchcraft, or simply a self-serving gift from a master manipulator who either really likes torturing others or just enjoys working with very small tools. But I’m definitely looking forward to finding out.
The Miniaturist premieres on Sunday, September 9.
