Every good love story needs a little time travel. Or, at least, so says the Outlander franchise, which made its bones telling the story of a love for the ages that crossed centuries. Now, prequel series Outlander: Blood of My Blood is set to continue that tradition, and its trailer features everything that made the flagship series so popular: Longing glances, desperate declarations of emotion, and lush Scottish scenery.
The series depicts the love stories of the parents of the flagship series’ primary protagonists, told across dual timelines set in both 18th-century Scotland and World War I-era England. In one, we follow Jamie’s parents, Ellen MacKenzie and Brian Fraser, whose romance we’re at least slightly familiar with thanks to Claire’s time at Castle Leoch back in Outlander’s first season. Fans know far less about the relationship between Claire’s parents, Julia Moriston and Henry Beauchamp, merely that they died in a car accident when their daughter was just five years old.
The trailer does confirm something wildly interesting, however — that Claire's mother, Julia, also traveled through the same stones that would one day shape her daughter's life. This makes narrative sense, as the original series confirmed that Claire's time travel ability had to come from one of her parents. But it does make things a bit clearer when it comes to how the show will tie these two love stories together, given that they are technically centuries apart. It appears that the series will depict Ellen and Brian's star-crossed struggle to be together, alongside Julia and Henry's fight to reunite with each other. Swoon, indeed.
Here's the series' (very basic) synopsis.
Outlander: Blood of my Blood is a romantic saga that unfolds across time. From the battlefields of World War I to the rugged Highlands of 18th century Scotland, two fated couples must defy the forces that seek to tear them apart, intersecting in surprising and unforeseen ways.
After 11 years of epic romance on the groundbreaking series “Outlander,” the timeless tale continues -- or rather begins -- on the eve of an earlier Jacobite rebellion. A prequel to Outlander, the series explores the lives and relationships of two couples as they fight against all odds to be together:
The series’s leading quartet features Hermione Corfield (We Hunt Together) as Julia, Jeremy Irvine (Dalgliesh) as Henry, Harriet Slater (Belgravia: The Next Chapter) as Ellen, and Jamie Roy (Condor’s Nest) as Brian.
The extended cast includes characters who played key roles back in Outlander Season 1 when the show focused more on clan politics. Rory Alexander (Pistol) is Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser, Sally Messham (Blitz) is Mrs. Fitz, Seamus McLean Ross (Payback) is Colum MacKenzie, Sam Retford (All Creatures Great & Small) is Dougal MacKenzie, Sadhbh Malin (Conversations with Friends) is Jocasta Cameron, Conor MacNeill (The Tourist) is legal advisor Ned Gowan, and Tony Curran (Mary & George) is Brian’s father, Simon Fraser, Lord Lovet.
Matthew B. Roberts serves as showrunner and executive produces alongside Ronald D. Moore, Maril Davis, and Jim Kohlberg. Blood of My Blood is produced by Tall Ship Productions, No Fooling Productions Inc., Story Mining & Supply Company, and Sony Pictures Television.
Outlander: Blood of My Blood will premiere Friday, August 8, 2025. New episodes will air weekly on Fridays at 8:00 p.m. ET on Starz in the U.S. and at 9 p.m. in Canada.
