Bridgerton Season 4 has wrapped filming, but Netflix has been adamant that the new season will not arrive until at least 2026, leaving fans with months to wait. Though the ~18-month gap between seasons is relatively the same as between Seasons 2 and 3, that wait didn't feel nearly as long, because creator Shonda Rhimes blessed fans with the Queen Charlotte-focused spinoff. A standalone romance, it took fans from the Regency Era to the previous Georgian Era that preceded it, to trace the relationships between Bridgerton's ruling figure and her cohort.
Unfortunately, Rhimes did not have another standalone series up her sleeve to keep fans satisfied between Seasons 3 and 4; however, Netflix hopes that a contemporary romance film set in the U.K. and starring one of the spinoff's main leads will fill the gap. Like Bridgerton, My Oxford Year is based on a best-selling romance, Julia Whelan's popular 2018 novel of the same name. The story focuses on Ana (respelled Anna for the film), an ambitious young American who gets the chance to fulfill her dream of studying at Oxford. But when she meets Oxford poetry professor Jamie Davenport, a local boy made good, their relationship turns her future upside down.
While it's not quite the stuff of Regency romance, My Oxford Year's trailer gives off the vibe of what every American Anglophile dreams of studying in England looks like. Check it out.
Here's the film's synopsis:
When Anna, an ambitious young American woman, sets out for Oxford University to fulfill a childhood dream, she has her life completely on track until she meets a charming and clever local who profoundly alters both of their lives.
American actor Sofia Carson (Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists) stars as Anna, with U.K. star Corey Mylchreest (Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story) as Jamie. The two are joined by several familiar faces, including Nia Anisah (Magpie Murders), Dougray Scott (Sherlock & Daughter), Poppy Gilbert (Sherwood), Yadier Fernandez (The Gold), Catherine McCormack (Lockerbie: A Search for Truth), Harry Trevaldwyn (My Lady Jane), Esmé Kingdom (Fallen), Nikhil Parmar (The Rig), Romina Cocca (The Penguin Lessons), and Hugh Coles (Baby Reindeer).
The film was conceived by Allison Burnett (Fame), who adapted it with Melissa Osborne (My Fault: London) from Julia Whelan's novel, and was directed by Iain Morris (The Inbetweeners). Carson executive produces alongside Laura Char Carson, Christopher Simon, Maggie Monteith, Pete Harris, and Caroline Levy.
My Oxford Year will premiere on Netflix on Friday, August 1, 2025.
