The 'Too Much' Trailer Is Never Enough

Netflix

Netflix initially announced it was greenlighting Too Much from American cultural lightning rod Lena Dunham at the end of 2023, which notably included British actor Will Sharpe, who was coming off his star-making turn in The White Lotus Season 2 at the time. However, the streamer did not specify that this was part of its U.K. slate until the tail end of January 2025, and American media have mainly focused on American lead Megan Stalter, who in the interim has become a significant name herself for her turn on Hacks.

However, the romantic comedy series is British, set in London, with a predominantly U.K.-based cast, save for Stalter, who plays the American fish out of water being all starry-eyed over the city as she searches for her perfect Englishman while hanging out with a downer of a manchild musician. By "American fish out of water," I mean "a grotesquely exaggerated version of Dunham," who recently married English musician Luis Felber. Febler collaborated on the series with Dunham and composed the soundtrack, so one assumes he's ok with all this.

(However, I swear if this was not pitched as "Dunham-Does-Love Actually," I'm going to have words with someone.)

Dunham's shows have always performed better when she works in a semi-autobiographical manner (see also: Girls), and while the trailer definitely promises Dunham's trademark cringeworthy, gross-out comedy will be part of the plot, the rom-com itself seems pretty delightful.

Here's the series' synopsis:

Jessica is a New York workaholic in her mid-thirties, reeling from a broken relationship that she thought would last forever, and slowly isolating everyone she knows. When every block in New York tells a story of her own bad behaviour, the only solution is to take a job in London, where she plans to live a life of solitude like a Brontë sister. But when she meets Felix – a walking series of red flags – she finds that their unusual connection is impossible to ignore, even as it creates more problems than it solves. Now they have to ask themselves: do Americans and Brits actually speak the same language? From the creator of Girls and the producers of Love Actually, Too Much is an ex-pat rom-com for the disillusioned who wonder if true love is still possible, but sincerely hope that it is.

Sharpe and Stalter are joined by an ensemble cast that includes British actors Richard E. Grant (Spiceworld), Adwoa Aboah (Top Boy), Prasanna Puwanarajah (World on Fire), Daisy Bevan (The Alienist), Dean-Charles Chapman (Game of Thrones), Stephen Fry (Heartstopper), and Leo Reich (It Gets Worse). The series' major guest stars include Andrew Scott (Ripley), Jennifer Saunders (AbFab), Kit Harington (Industry), Rita Ora (Twist), and American Jessica Alba (Alias).

They are joined by American actors Michael Zegen (The Penguin), Rhea Perlman (Barbie), Emily Ratajkowski (History of the World, Part II), Rita Wilson (1883), Andrew Rannells (The Romanoffs), and Janicza Bravo (Fully Realized Humans), plus French actor Adèle Exarchopoulos (Blue Is the Warmest Colour), and Japanese actor Kaori Momoi (Ghost in the Shell).

Dunham penned and directed all episodes of the series with Camilla Bray serving as producer. She also executive produces with Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Michael P. Cohen, Surian Fletcher-Jones, and Bruce Eric Kaplan

All episodes of Too Much will arrive on Netflix on Thursday, July 10, 2025.
