Suranne Jones’ first effort at penning her own series has landed an American debut. MaryLand, a family drama about two sisters reunited over the death of their mother, Mary, will officially come to PBS in 2024 as part of the Masterpiece spring lineup. The long-running British anthology series announced today that Jones’ debut effort, in which she also stars, will directly follow Nolly, which was previously announced to debut on March 17, 2023. Nolly, which only runs three installments, will conclude on Sunday, March 31, 2023, and MaryLand will debut the following Sunday, April 7, 2023, at 9 p.m. ET.
When it aired in the UK, television critics praised the series, with The Independent calling it “a moving portrait of sisterhood.” As we noted when the series moved from streaming on ITVX to airing on ITV linear, MaryLand was rapidly turning into a sleeper hit, with viewership picking up via word of mouth. Masterpiece’s Executive Producer, Susanne Simpson, also said in a statement, “MaryLand is an emotional journey of two estranged sisters who are determined to find the truth about their mother. Suranne Jones and Eve Best deliver stunning performances in this wonderful show.”
Along with the announcement it had picked up the series, Masterpiece also released a first-look trailer. Check it out:
Here's the series' synopsis via the Masterpiece press release:
MaryLand is a story about two sisters, about what binds them together and what has driven them apart. Becca and Rosaline find themselves thrown together by the sudden death of their mother, Mary. They come to find out that she was living an entirely secret life on the Isle of Man, far from her home, with her husband, Becca and Rosaline’s father.
As the sisters travel through the early days of grief and discover their mother’s secrets, they meet their mother’s quirky friend Cathy who seems to know more about their mother than they do. Becca and Rosaline find themselves asking fundamental questions about their identities and the relationships with the men in their lives. Mary’s death offers them a chance to not only reframe their relationship but fundamentally reshape who they are. At its heart, MaryLand is a love story of two sisters.
Jones stars as Becca and Best as Rosaline, with Stockard Channing as Cathy, an American whose relationship with their mother is part of what upends their homecoming. The series also co-stars George Costigan (Happy Valley), Hugh Quarshie (Riches), Dean Lennox Kelly (Tom Jones), and Andrew Knott (Ackley Bridge).
All three episodes were penned by Jones and Anne-Marie O’Connor (Trollied), with director Sue Tully (Lark Rise to Candleford) helming all three installments.
MaryLand will premiere on most PBS stations beginning Sunday, April 7, 2023, at 9 p.m. ET and run weekly. All three episodes will be available for members on premiere day on most PBS Passport services. As always, check your local listings.
