Popular BBC One thriller The Night Manager is coming to America this Spring on cable network AMC, as yet another outlet looks to cash in on the growing popularity of British television among US audiences.

If you’re an Anglophile in any capacity, then you’ve probably seen some of those (many) GIFs of star Tom Hiddleston in various stages of undress, but it turns out there’s a lot more to this drama than the Avengers and Hollow Crown star looking attractive.

The six-part series is based on the John Le Carre novel of the same name, and follows the story of a former British soldier turned hotel night manager named Jonathan Pine (Hiddleston) who is recruited by MI6 to help bring down powerful international arms dealer Richard Roper, who is played by none other than the always awesome Hugh Laurie.

Drama – and what appears to be quite a bit of gunfire – predictably ensues.

Other familiar faces in the Night Manager cast include Russell Tovey (Being Human, Sherlock, Looking), Olivia Coleman (Broadchurch), Katherine Kelly (Mr. Selfridge), Tobias Menzies (Outlander), David Harewood (Homeland, Supergirl)  (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest), Douglas Hodge (Penny Dreadful) and more.

Interestingly, in something of a modern update, intelligence operator Angela Burr – played by Coleman – was actually a man in the book. Executive producers have explained that this switch was made to more accurately reflect the world we live in now – when the book was published over twenty years ago, espionage was an almost exclusively male world, which is not the case today.

To be honest, I’m pretty sure I’d watch basically anything that promised me Hiddleston and Laurie going head-to-head on the small screen, but from what I’ve heard The Night Manager is actually a pretty good drama to boot, so it looks like we’re all in for a treat.

The Night Manager premieres on AMC beginning April 19.  Anybody planning to give it a go?
