The Netflix Trailer for 'Peaky Blinders' Season 5 Promises a Violent Return for the Shelbys
With the U.S. release of Peaky Blinders Season 5 just a few weeks away, Netflix has dropped a trailer for the Shelby family’s return, and it’s full of pretty much everything you expect from this show: Violence, big explosions, threats of death and a whole lot of guns.
“There is God. And there are the Peaky Blinders,” intones star Cillian Murphy over an iconic group slo-motion walk that features Murphy’s Tommy alongside fellow family members Ada (Sophie Rundle), Arthur (Paul Anderson), Polly (Helen McCrory), and Lizzie (Natasha O’Keeffe).
Only that might not be entirely true this time around.
Season 5 begins in 1929, just as the Shelbys and the rest of the world must deal with the fallout from the infamous stock market crash. Tommy, who is now an MP in Parliament (just go with it), must deal with this crisis on both a personal and a national level. And according to Steven Knight, the event will hit the Shelbys hard. The series creator told Deadline they’ll be “seriously affected,” since the family has “invested their legitimate money and are going to have to fall back on the illegitimate money.” Which, you know, will surely go well for everyone involved.
Season 5 will also introduce The Hunger Games star Sam Clafin as Oswald Mosley, a firebrand real-life politician who became leader of the British Union of Fascists. Let’s just say that he and Tommy don’t exactly hit it off, and this guy is kind of a monster. Which, as we all know, is the sort of guy Tommy Shelby is best equipped to fight.

Spoiler alert: This clip doesn’t feature nearly enough Polly, and that is 100% the tea.
Interestingly enough, the BBC trailer for the new season features some different footage than the U.S. version, as well as a wildly more ominous and restrained tone. (An interesting contrast in terms of how to market the series on either side of the pond, but perhaps one that speaks to the sort of audiences that tune in in both countries and what sorts of things they expect to see.)
Other new faces joining the show are The Miniaturist’s Anna Taylor-Joy and Love/Hate’s Brian Gleeson. Returning cast members include Aidan Gillen, Finn Cole, Kate Phillips, Ned Dennehy, Packy Lee and more.
Peaky Blinders Season 5 hits Netflix on Friday, October 4. Will you be giving it a look?
