'Peaky Blinders' Movie Filming in Birmingham
The highly anticipated Peaky Blinders movie started filming in September 2024, as Netflix announced that some significant A-list actors will join star Cillian Murphy as the series transfers to the big screen. Rebecca Ferguson (Dune), Barry Keoghan (Saltburn), and Tim Roth (Rob Roy) were all confirmed as joining the film, though Knight and Netflix are keeping their roles under wraps. But Murphy, who returns as Tommy Shelby, isn't the only one from the original series who will be turning up on the big screen. While some fan favorites didn't survive the show's final season, several survived the finale and will reprise their characters.
Top of the list is Stephen Graham, who will also star in Knight's upcoming A Thousand Blows on Hulu. In the show's final season, Graham was introduced as Hayden Stagg, the union convenor helping himself to the opium stash. As one who survived the final season, he'll return as Stagg for the film. Another central character who survived the finale (off-screen, but still) was Ada, Tommy Shelby's sister, played by Sophie Rundle (After the Flood). One of Tommy's final acts was the bequeath of the family business to Ada just before he faked his death, and her return has fans' excitement peaked, no pun intended.
All three were spotted filming in Birmingham in the past week. Knight has been pushing to boost filming work in the West Midlands, an area hard hit by decades of austerity, and bringing Netflix-sized budgets to the area is a form of paying back the city where he grew up.
Like the new characters joining the series, the film’s plot details are also under wraps, other than picking Shelby’s story back up sometime in World War II. In a statement when filming began, Knight was quoted as saying, “I’m thrilled to see the cameras rolling on this new chapter of the Peaky Blinders story, set during World War II. The country is at war, and so, of course, are our Peaky Blinders.”
Other returnees for the film from the original series include Ned Dennehy (Culprits) as Charlie Strong, Packy Lee (Blue Lights) as Johnny Dogs, and Ian Peck (His Dark Materials) as Curly. As for newcomers beyond Ferguson, Keoghan, and Roth, I May Destroy You’s Jay Lycurgo is the only other confirmed newcomer.
Peaky alum director Tom Harper (Les Miserables) will helm the film from Knight’s script. Knight and Murphy executive produce with Caryn Mandabach, Guy Heeley, David Kosse, Jamie Glazebrook, Andrew Warren, and David Mason.
The Peaky Blinders film is being filmed in the U.K., with an assumed release date of late 2025. Peaky Blinders Seasons 1 through 6 are streaming on Netflix.
