'Ms Fisher's Modern Murder Mysteries' Arrives in the US in April
Rejoice Fisher fans! While the release date for the Hon. Phryne Fisher's big screen debut, Miss Fisher & The Crypt of Tears, remains a mystery, there is official word that the spinoff series is coming to America - and sooner than you might think. Ms Fisher's Modern Murder Mysteries (styled "MODern Murder Mysteries" in Australia) is a sequel-style reboot of the original mystery series, starring Geraldine Hakewill as Miss Fisher's niece, poised and ready to take over the family business.
Like the original, the new series is a period piece, but this time set in the mid-1960s, rather than the mid-1920s. The new series is comprised of four feature-length episodes (aka 90 minutes or so). Ms Fisher will arrive on Acorn TV on Monday, April 29, 2019.
Check out the trailer from the series' debut in Australia.
The rights to the Miss Fisher spinoff and the movie were Acorn TV's big get this year. The streaming service, which focuses on British and international TV series, landed the rights to debut both in 2019, effectively making it the online home for Miss Fisher devotees. The Miss Fisher film will also premiere on it, along with a run in theaters, while the new Ms Fisher series will join a line up of Acorn TV's original programming.
From the press release:
Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries remains one of Australia’s most popular series worldwide. As fans wait for a new feature film, Miss Fisher & the Crypt of Tears, later this year, they can enjoy the top-rated, new spin-off series set in the 1960s. When the famous aunt she never knew, Phryne Fisher, goes missing over the highlands of New Guinea, the gorgeously reckless Peregrine Fisher (Geraldine Hakewill, Wanted) inherits a windfall. Peregrine sets out to become a world-class private detective in her own right with the unerring guidance of The Adventuresses’ Club, a group of exceptional women of which her celebrated aunt was a member. A natural rule breaker, Peregrine is fearless, fun, and charmingly down-to-earth, as well as having a keen instinct for solving crimes. With newfound wealth and The Adventuresses to hone her rough edges and become the family she’s never had, Peregrine is unstoppable. The series co-stars Joel Jackson (Peter Allen: Not The Boy Next Door, Deadline Gallipoli) as smart, ambitious cop Detective James Steed and Catherine McClements (Wentworth) as Birdie, an ex-member of WW2 Special Forces and head of The Adventuresses. The new series features every bit the embodiment of style, glamour and adventure as the 1920s-set original.
Ms Fisher premiered on Seven on February 21 down in Australia, and reviews suggested Down Under TV watchers found it as charming as the original 1920s set series. Audiences tuned in in droves too, with the series premiere winning the ratings derby. Whether Phryne in 1925 or Peregrine in 1964, it seems fans cannot get enough of Fishers solving murders for fun and profit.
Ms Fisher's Modern Murder Mysteries premieres on Acorn TV on Monday, April 29, 2019. As always, we will be covering all the Miss Fisher news here at Telly Visions.
