It’s official: Production on the long-awaited fourth season of Grantchester is under way!

In case you haven’t heard yet: Season 4 of the popular mystery series will feature some big changes, however. These will be the last episodes featuring star James Norton, and while it certainly sounds as though the show plans to continue into a fifth season, ITV will cast a new vicar at some future to-be-determined date.

So, basically what I’m saying is: Enjoy every minute of this while you can.

However, we still have an entire season left with Norton and his co-star Robson Green solving crimes in the picturesque village, so let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

The cast and crew got together last week for the first official read through for the untitled Season 4 premiere. In honor of this moment, several members of Team Grantchester tweeted about their experience.

Filming on the new season kicked off shortly thereafter (on June 18 if Twitter is anything to go by) and, subsequently, there were even more goodies to share. Executive producer Emma Kingston-Lloyd posted a behind-the-scenes snap of star Norton on the first day of his last series, as the photo is adorable as you’d expect.

(And not just because everyone’s favorite pup Dickens is in it.)

Cast members Al Weaver, Tessa Peake-Jones and Kacey Ainsworth are all signed on for Season 4, alongside Norton and Robson. So, despite the fact that big changes are in store, this sounds like it should be a pretty normal season for the most part. However, we don’t exactly know what the plot is likely to involve, particularly since Season 3 pretty much ended with the series’ existing status quo in place and the whole Amanda situation on ice for the foreseeable future.

At any rate, the folks in charge have promised that Norton’s exit will be memorable. “While I’m sad that these will be James Norton’s final episodes, we will make sure he goes out with a bang,” said Executive Producer Diedrick Santer. Hopefully he doesn’t’ mean literally, in this case, but you never know.

Grantchester Season 4 is expected to debut in 2019, but there are no firm airdates yet for either side of the pond.

Are you excited for Season 4? Nervous about Norton's impending departure? Let's discuss.
