Get Excited: Hugh Laurie Has a New TV Show
Hugh Laurie has exactly been doing nothing since his long-running medical drama House wrapped up back in 2012, recently appearing in such popular series as Veep and The Night Manager. But now he’s got a starring role on television once again – or, rather, on popular streaming service Hulu, which is basically television in this day and age– with new drama Chance.
Yes, Laurie is once again playing a doctor, and starring in a show named after his lead character. But that seems to be where the similarities between House and Chance end, as this appears to be a much darker, more stress-inducing affair.
Based on the acclaimed novel by Kem Nunn, Chance is a provocative, psychological thriller that focuses on Eldon Chance, a San Francisco-based forensic neuropsychiatrist who reluctantly gets sucked into a violent and dangerous world of mistaken identity, police corruption and mental illness. After an ill-advised decision regarding an alluring patient who may or may not be struggling with a multiple personality disorder, Chance finds himself in the crosshairs of her abusive spouse, who also happens to be a ruthless police detective. In over his head, Chance’s descent into the city’s wayward underbelly, all while navigating the waters of a contentious divorce and tribulations of his teenage daughter, soon spirals into an ever deepening exploration n of one of mankind’s final frontiers- the shadowy, undiscovered country of the human mind.
So, yeah, this role sounds miles away from his previous role as misanthropic medical genius Gregory House. (But that’s a good thing, I think.)

The most important revelation here is probably that Laurie is back to doing his flawless American accent. (Seriously, I wonder if that’s starting to feel as natural to him as his actual British one at this point?)
Chance has already been given a two season order by Hulu, and the show begins streaming October 19. Will you be giving it a look?
