The First Trailer for 'Grantchester' Season 5 Promises a New Beginning
Prepare your emotions, Grantchester fans. The first trailer for Season 5 is here, and it promises something of a fresh start for the popular mystery series.
Season 4 marked a rather colossal shift for the show, as original star James Norton departed after just two episodes, leaving everyone to wonder what a Grantchester without Sydney Chambers might look like. The answer? A bit familiar, but different all the same.
Tom Brittney took over as the series' new vicar, Will Davenport, in the wake of Norton's departure, and Season 5 will be his first full outing as the show's true lead. Robson Green is still there as his loyal partner in crime-solving, and the bulk of the series' supporting characters remain as well.
The new season will pick up a year on from the events of Season 4, so when Grantchester returns we should likely expect a signficant shift in both Will Davenport's character and his personal and professional relationship with Geordie Keating. After all, they've had quite some time to properly get to know one another offscreen since last we saw them.
The first trailer for Season 5 leans fairly aggressively into that atmosphere of change, touting the arrival of new characters, the exploration of new relationships and a variety of new challenges for our characters to face. And though the atmosphere reflects Prime Minister Harold Macmillan's idea that the British people had ‘never had it so good’, it certainly looks as though there are dark problems lurking in the shadows of this new Eden.
If the clip is anything to go by, Will's struggles with his vow of celibacy, Geordie's marriage woes and Leonard's attempt to live a life that reflects who he truly is will all be significant subplots this season.
Watch for yourselves below.
Grantchester Season 5 will premiere on Masterpiece beginning Sunday, June 14. If that feels a bit on the early side, it's becuase it is - the show previously aired in the U.S. during high midsummer, usually around mi-July. But these days, who among us is going to complain?
