The Best-Laid Plans Go Awry in 'Code of Silence's Penultimate Episode

Long-kept secrets come to the surface and the best laid plans of detectives and thieves go awry in the latest episode of Code of Silence. All begins quietly, when DI James Marsh visits a woman at her home. It turns out she’s Liam’s former foster mother, Dawn. It’s nearly the anniversary of her husband Charlie’s death. Charlie was killed by an associate of Liam’s gang. Charlie has been on James’s mind because of the investigation, but he doesn’t say anything about it to Dawn.

James finds out that Amir Joshi’s valuable necklace is due to be in transit soon to be shown to private buyers, a moment of weakness when the gang might strike. The detectives set to work preparing to catch them in the act.

Tired of keeping secrets, Alison meets her estranged father at a pool hall. She’s reached a breaking point and needs to come clean to someone, and her father’s criminal background makes him a good confidant. She confesses to him that she’s gotten wrapped up in something illegal and a friend (Liam) has offered to take her and her mom abroad. She tells him she doesn’t want people to get hurt and is considering telling the full story to the police, but she doesn’t want to snitch on Liam. Her father tells her to consider what *she* thinks is right, not what the police would consider right. 

Alison meets with Ashleigh and James, and Liam listens in through her wiretapped hearing aid. She tells the detectives that Liam told her everything and warns them that his group may try to steal the necklace that night. She confesses that she didn’t tell the detectives earlier because Liam trusts her and she’s developed a soft spot for him. The detectives tell her (for what feels like the hundredth time) that she can’t see Liam again.

The detectives get the go-ahead to arrest the gang members. James, Ben, and Ashleigh shift into high gear; meanwhile, Liam and the gang prepare to break into the vault. Liam sneaks away from the preparations to meet Alison in secret. He asks her to consider running away with him, but she begs him to walk away from the robbery. He refuses, and they’re at a stalemate. He knows she’s working with the detectives, but he won’t admit it, and she won’t give it up, so she leaves him.

Alison meets with her ex, Ethan, to ask him for advice about Liam. She tells him the whole story and asks how Liam might know about her detective work. Eithan checks her phone and realizes that her hearing aid is linked to Liam’s computer by Bluetooth. 

At the bank where Amir Joshi’s vault is located, James and Ashleigh attempt to inform the bank teller that a robbery is in progress. The teller reveals that the contents of the vault were removed earlier that day. It turns out, Amir Joshi’s daughter arranged for the necklace to be removed, contrary to what was planned. 

Alison finally reaches Ashleigh to tell her that the robbery is planned to take place at the luxury hotel where Alison stayed with Liam days before. The gang heads there, the detectives hot on their heels. Inside the hotel, Reshmi Joshi is shooting photos for a magazine cover. She’s waiting for the necklace to arrive to complete her outfit.

When the necklace arrives, Braden goes inside the hotel posing as waitstaff while Liam guides with security footage. As soon as Braden gets inside Reshmi’s hotel room, Liam activates the hotel's fire alarms. Alison arrives at the hotel as everyone is evacuating, and she beats the detectives to it. Liam watches her come into view on the security camera feed. She tries to alert a hotel worker about the robbery in progress, but he won’t listen. Braden swaps the real necklace for a copy. As Reshmi evacuates, she demands that her staff go back for the necklace. 

The robbery plans start to go awry when Liam’s remote access stops working, and he can’t get Braden out through the right hotel doors. Braden dumps the jewels in a laundry chute, and Liam ditches the security footage to go and get him. Before he can get to Braden, he goes after Alison in the chaos of the hotel lobby. She begs him to stop, and he begs her to get out.

Braden grows impatient just as Ben arrives at the scene. Braden starts to flee the hotel, but Ben spots him in the lobby. Knowing he’s been caught, Braden reaches for his gun and shoots Ben. Alison and Liam watch in horror as Ben takes a shot to his side. Alison pushes Liam away and rushes to help Ben, muttering “sorry” over and over as he bleeds out.

Alison is taken to the police station for an interview, but all the while she’s reliving the traumatic moment of the shooting. James and Alison interview her, and it’s strictly business; their working relationship is forgotten. They tell her that, in addition to Ben being shot, one of Amir Joshi’s bodyguards was killed. The detectives are suspicious that Alison intentionally misled the investigation. Alison explains that Liam has likely been listening to her through her hearing aids, using her to misdirect the detectives. The detectives reveal that Liam fled the scene, and the jewels are still missing as well. The detectives think Liam was always planning to strike out on his own, and he used Alison to make it work.
