Alison’s romance with Liam deepens, but she struggles to evade detection in the latest episode of Code of Silence. She meets with DS Ashleigh Francis to report her close call with Liam and Braden the night before, and Ashleigh warns Alison (not for the first time, nor the last) not to put herself in danger. Liam comes to the Canterbury Tap to apologize to Alison, but Braden interrupts him before he can tell her anything.
Alison follows Liam and Braden to a secret meeting at a construction site. She hides under a window and uses a closed captioning app on her phone to transcribe their speech. Like lipreading, transcription is far from perfect, revealing not only the perils of the investigation but also the frustrations of the deaf experience in a hearing world. Alison’s phone rings, alerting the gang, and they send Liam out to check for an eavesdropper. Alison escapes detection in the nick of time. Ashleigh is upset that Alison went out of her way to follow them. Still, she can’t deny that Alison’s poor judgment has gathered some invaluable information about the gang’s robbery plans.
Back at the Canterbury Tap, Alison tells Liam off for scaring her when he and Braden demanded to see her phone. The gender dynamics of two men ganging up on a young woman are clear to both of them, even if Alison’s true motives are not. Liam invites Alison back to his place and promises to explain his evasive behavior. He tells her that he had an abusive father and grew up in foster care, making him feel undeserving of love. Liam goes in for a kiss, but his phone rings with a text. Alison tries to read the message, but Liam catches her. She manages to play it off and swiftly leaves Liam’s apartment.
As Alison gets closer to uncovering key details of the jewel thieves’ plans, her home life is imploding. Her previously unemployed mom has been hired for a new job, but can’t secure an interpreter in time to begin training. The two officially receive word that they are being evicted from their apartment. Her ex-boyfriend Eithan tries to advise them on tenants’ rights, but there seems to be nothing they can do.
At the police station, Alison watches through a live feed as the gang holds a clandestine meeting in a noisy ice rink. It’s touch-and-go for a moment, but Alison manages to pick up an essential piece of information for cracking the case: the target of the planned robbery is a billionaire named Amir Joshi. Ashleigh tells DI James Marsh that she is concerned about how deeply Alison is invested in the case. James wants to keep her involved, and asks Ashleigh if she would be so protective if Alison was hearing. Ashleigh insists she would act the same either way; she has a bad feeling about this case.
At the Canterbury Tap, Liam asks Alison out on a “proper date.” She says yes. Alison watches Braden and the bar manager, Mark, fight about Braden bringing guns into the pub. She knows from what she’s observed with the detectives that these guns are part of the planned heist. When she tells Ashleigh about the guns, Ashleigh implores her to stay away. The presence of firearms means that, legally, the detectives have to get involved now. Ashleigh arranges a drug check at the bar as cover for cops to search the place for weapons, but they come up empty.
Alison comes home from work to find Braden in her living room, intimidating her mom. He insinuates that he knows Alison is up to something and threatens her. He spews ableist insults at Alison and her mom, accusing Alison’s father of leaving because she and her mom are both Deaf. He leaves, but Alison is rattled enough to stand Liam up on their planned date.
Liam comes to Alison’s house after being stood up. She says it isn’t about him and that he doesn’t know anything about her life. For example, he didn’t know she was getting evicted. She asks earnestly if he’s involved in something illegal, but he says it’s not what she thinks. (Little does he know…) All he’ll tell her is that he doesn’t hurt people, and he will tell her more eventually. When Liam arrives back at his apartment, Braden is there. Braden has brought the guns from the bar to Liam’s apartment, but Liam is upset because he doesn’t want to have anything to do with firearms.
Alison works with Eithan to figure out how she and her mom could keep their apartment. As if Alison’s life wasn’t already entangled with the gang enough, she discovers that one of the gang members works for the corporation working to evict them. She tells James in the hopes that the detectives can stop the eviction, but he tells her that life isn’t fair. The only thing Alison can do is stay involved in the case from a distance.
Alison returns to the Canterbury Tap, where Liam is waiting for her. They exchange uneasy apologies, and Liam kisses her.
