Co-commissioned by the BBC and BritBox International, Beyond Paradise is the second super successful spinoff of a long-running, already-popular mystery brand, Death In Paradise. The first success story, Sister Boniface Mysteries (a spinoff of Father Brown), recently announced filming had commenced on Season 3. Now filming has also commenced on Beyond Paradise’s second season, kicking off with the show’s first holiday-timed Christmas special.

The series premiere of Beyond Paradise launched simultaneously on both sides of the pond, a rare event usually reserved for Doctor Who-level series. However, the marketing ploy brought massive attention to the new series, starring one of Death in Paradise’s favorite of its rotating police chief lineup, DI Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall), and the love of his life Martha Lloyd (Sally Bretton). Beyond Paradise Season 1 became the UK’s most successful new drama launch in the first half of 2023, averaging 8 million viewers.

Like most streaming services, BritBox does not disclose viewership stats; however, considering how quickly and enthusiastically the studio embraced the series and a co-commission of Season 2, the series likely did well with American audiences. The Christmas special will pick up directly after Season 1 left off, with Humphrey and Martha figuring out their next steps following their make-or-break trip to Saint Marie at the end of the first season.

Here's the synopsis for the show's holiday episode and Season 2:

Filmed in picturesque locations around South-West England in Devon and Cornwall, the new series features the same joyful escapism, humor, and mind-boggling cases fans have come to adore since series one. Shipton Abbott’s new detective inspector will be tasked with solving a shocking crime on a steam train, an arson attack predicted by a medium, and the baffling disappearance of the local fishing legend.

The Christmas special episode and Season 2 will again star Marshall as DI Humphrey Goodman and Bretton as Martha Lloyd, reprising their characters from Death in Paradise. The series' co-stars are also set to return, including Zahra Ahmadi (The Bay) as DS Esther Williams, Dylan Llewellyn (Derry Girls) as PC Kelby Hartford, Barbara Flynn (The Durrells) as Anne Lloyd, and Felicity Montagu (Tom Jones) as Margo Martins.

Created by Robert Thorogood and Tony Jordan, Beyond Paradise Season 2 is a co-commission between the BBC and BritBox International and is produced by Red Planet Pictures. Jordan, who founded Red Planet Pictures, will act as showrunner, with the six-episode season and the Christmas special written and helmed by a full team. Jordan, Tim Key, and Belinda Campbell executive produce for Red Planet Pictures, Danielle Scott-Haughton for BBC, Reemah Sakaan and Stephen Nye for BritBox International.

Beyond Paradise's first Christmas special will air in the 2023 festive season. Season 2 is expected to premiere in early 2024.
