In what is becoming a pattern in Code of Silence, the series' fourth episode begins with Ashleigh yet again warning Alison not to get too emotionally involved with Liam. Throwing caution to the wind as usual, Alison goes to see Liam and asks him more about his criminal activities. He says he can’t say more, but wants to keep seeing Alison and work through it.
Enter Alison’s ex Eithan, again, who is trying to help Alison and her mom find housing for after they are evicted. Alison’s mom tells her it’s good to have a partner who understands: he’s Deaf like Alison, he’s close to her family, and he understands her financial situation. In her mom’s eyes, he’s perfect.
Liam’s boss Helen, the ringleader of the jewelry thieves, visits the Canterbury Tap and orders from Alison to scope her out. The gang is becoming suspicious of Alison’s motives, ever since Braden and Liam caught her watching the security cameras and being cagey about her texts. Helen is doing extra reconnaissance because Liam wants to take Alison on a work trip.
Alison asks Liam about the trip, and he tells her it’s an overnight trip to a fancy hotel. Alison reports this to the detectives, who naturally aren’t thrilled about the prospect of Alison getting that much closer to the case. Strongheaded as she is, Alison goes anyway.
At the hotel, Liam hacks the hotel’s system to upgrade their rooms to a suite and gifts Alison a lavish dress. They have dinner at the hotel’s restaurant where Alison sees Amir Joshi, the target of the robbery.
Over dinner, Liam opens up to Alison about how he became a hacker. He tells her that Helen asked him to run a background check on Alison, and he found out that her estranged dad had trouble with the law. They bond over their complicated family histories, because Liam also tells her about his experience in foster care. He recalls his favorite foster family and shows Alison a ring he wears that his foster father gave him before he passed away. After dinner, they go back to their individual rooms in their suite, but Alison can’t leave well enough alone. She follows Liam into his room and they spend the night together.
The following morning, they share a tender moment before Alison has put her hearing aids in for the day. She lets Liam hold one of them and he asks her what it’s like to wear them. She’s never known anything else, she says. But she also tells him, “When you’re with people who can sign, it’s quite freeing not needing to wear it.” Liam promises to learn British Sign Language for her.
Back at the police department, Ashleigh and DC Ben Lawford are concerned because Alison has gone off the grid and is not responding to Ashleigh’s texts. Ashleigh texts Alison demanding to meet, and Alison gives in. She tells Liam she’s going to call her mom, but Liam watches on the hotel security footage as she gets into Ashleigh’s car. Alison confirms that she saw Amir Joshi in the hotel, and Ashleigh tells her that he is there to sell his daughter’s necklace. Ashleigh and Alison have a particularly tense version of their usual argument: Ashleigh thinks Alison is going beyond the call of duty, Alison doesn’t care.
Alison meets Liam back in the hotel restaurant, where he is cold towards her. He asks her to lip-read Amir Joshi and his daughter, who are sitting across the bar from them. Amir is talking about selling the necklace, and Alison feeds all the information to Liam.
That afternoon, Liam drives Alison home and tells her the trip was very special to him. Alison says she wishes he wasn’t wrapped up in illegal business and they could have a normal relationship. Liam wishes the same.
Alison meets with Ashleigh and James to debrief the trip, and (gasp!) Liam listens to their conversation through Alison’s hearing aids, which he tampered with during the trip. James tells Alison that she’s going too far, and has to call things off with Liam. In a parallel scene, Liam debriefs the trip with the gang. Braden tells him that he’s suspicious of Alison. Liam says she’s not a threat, and that he wouldn’t compromise the job for some girl.
Alison meets Eithan at a candlelit movie theater. He’s arranged a private screening of moments throughout their relationship to convince her to give him a second chance. In a truly bizarre move, he proposes to her, and every inch of her expression conveys that this was the wrong decision. Further enforcing her disinterest in Eithan, she leaves the movie theater to have dinner with Liam.
At dinner, Liam confesses the entire jewel heist plot to Alison and asks her to keep quiet about it. She looks upset, but he stands to give her a romantic soliloquy… in British Sign Language! He tells her that now he’s seen what life could be like with her, and he wants it. He says that after the heist, he will have to leave the country, but he wants to take Alison and her mom with him. Time will tell how Alison responds to the emotional whiplash of a proposal followed by an offer to run away together within hours of each other.
Code of Silence continues with new episodes on BritBox on Thursdays through the end of August 2025. Season 2 is already greenlit.
