The 50th anniversary season of Masterpiece will kick off in January of 2021, with the Glenda Jackson drama Elizabeth is Missing, which will see the Academy Award-winning actress return to PBS for the first time since 1971.
The 84-year-old Jackson previously won two Emmy awards for her role as Queen Elizabeth I in Masterpiece Theater drama, Elizabeth R. She recently won the BAFTA award for Leading Actress for her performance in Elizabeth is Missing, which aired in the U.K. in 2019. The role also marks her first television appearance, period, in twenty-five years.
Based on the book of the same name by Emma Healey, the two-part drama tells the story of Maud, who is convinced that something terrible has happened when her best friend, Elizabeth, goes missing and sets out to solve the mystery herself. But with her dementia worsening and the past and present starting to merge, can she figure out what happened before her own mind erases all the clues?
Other familiar faces in the series' cast include Maggie Steed as Elizabeth, alongside The Nest's Sophie Rundle Game of Thrones' Mark Stanley, Liv Hill, Julie Hannan, and more.

“We’re thrilled Glenda Jackson will lead off our 50th anniversary year,” Masterpiece executive producer Susanne Simpson said in a statement. “Masterpiece has been home to some of the best British dramas of our time, and a showcase for British ‘acting royalty’ such as Maggie Smith, Kenneth Branagh, Helen Mirren, and Benedict Cumberbatch, and of course, Glenda Jackson.” The series will officially mark its 50th anniversary on Sunday, January 10, 2021.
Elizabeth is Missing will premiere on Sunday, January 3, 2021 at 9pm.
