Watch the Trailer for David Tennant’s New HBO Comedy 'Camping'

So, it may have taken David Tennant a few years post-Doctor Who to become a proper big name star, but he certainly seems to be everywhere these days now. (Not that I am complaining, let’s be clear.)

Not only is he set to star in the highly anticipated Amazon adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Good Omens, he’s voicing Scrooge McDuck in Disney’s new animated reboot of Ducktales, and playing John Knox in the upcoming Mary, Queen of Scots film that seems primed for awards season. (This is, of course, not counting his popular turns in Marvel series Jessica Jones and mystery series Broadchurch.)

Whew. The former Tenth Doctor seems to be doing just fine outside the TARDIS, is all I’m saying.

Tennant’s next project is something a bit different for the actor of late – a comedy. Tennant is set to play Walt in upcoming HBO limited series Camping. The eight-episode comedy will tell the story of a celebratory camping trip in honor of Walt’s 45th birthday, which quickly becomes a disaster.

Alias star Jennifer Garner will play Walt’s “controlling” wife Kathryn. (Camping marks her first television role since Alias wrapped in 2006.) Juliette Lewis, Arturo Del Puerto , Ione Skye, Janicza Bravo and Brett Gelman also star as a variety of the couple’s friends and other acquaintances.

Based on the British series created by Julia Davis, the American version comes from producing partners Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner, who helmed the network’s controversial comedy Girls. Based on its panel at last month’s bi-annual Television Critics Association press tour, HBO seems quite keen on the show, which at least appears to be a good sign.

Tennant, for his part, seems relieved to get the chance to play a nice guy after portraying so many villains.  “You can only play so many psychopaths without taking it home,” Tennant said during the series’ TCA presentation. “It was lovely to play someone so sweet and open-hearted.”

He even has glasses, guys. How am I supposed to resist that?

Camping will premiere on HBO on Sunday, October 14.

Does this sound like something you’d watch? (I mean, I personally will watch Tennant do basically anything, so you know I’m in.) Let’s discuss in the comments.

Lacy's love of British TV is embarrassingly extensive, but primarily centers around evangelizing all things Doctor Who, and watching as many period dramas as possible.

Digital media type by day, she also has a fairly useless degree in British medieval literature, and dearly loves to talk about dream poetry, liminality, and the medieval religious vision. (Sadly, that opportunity presents itself very infrequently.) York apologist, Ninth Doctor enthusiast, and unabashed Ravenclaw. Say hi on Threads or Blue Sky at @LacyMB.
