Contemporary crime drama DCI Banks is returning to ITV for a fifth season!
Stars Stephen Tompkinson and Caroline Catz return in a brand new six-part series, based on the books by acclaimed novelist Peter Robinson. As in previous seasons, the show will once again feature three self-contained stories told over two episodes each. However, in a new twist, a more serial element will also be added, and woven through all six installments.
This overarching “explosive crime story” is supposed to be somehow connected to all three mysteries and will, apparently, force DCI Banks to “question all that he holds dear.” (So, you know, no pressure.) But how the show will balance between these two elements is, as yet, unclear.
Here’s what we do know about the plot Season 5, per the official press release:
When Banks confronts a powerful adversary who has been dubbed by his superiors as too big to bring down, his dogged pursuit of justice sets in motion a chain of events that rips at the very fabric of his life, both professional and personal. Helen encounters unexpected challenges when she tries for promotion and Annie pursues her own results‐driven, gut instinct style of policing which threatens to ruin her relationship with Banks.

DCI Banks Season 5 will premiere in the UK on August 31. No word yet on when we can expect to see this latest season in the US, but if the past is anything to go by, at some point in late 2016 seems likely. That’s just a best guess though, so keep an eye out with your local public television station over the next few weeks for news!
