More Amazing British Actors Take the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge in Creative Ways

The online furor surrounding the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge – an awareness-raising charity event in which you are nominated to dump water over your head and donate to support research and treatment of the neurodegenerative disease ALS – may have settled down to a dull roar over the past week, but the viral event is by no means finished.

A slew of notable British actors have already partaken in the challenge, cheerfully dousing themselves and writing checks for a good cause, and now an even greater number have signed on, including several of the most iconic performers you could possibly think of. (Though, sadly, no Maggie Smith as yet. At least we still have something to hope for. )

Anyway, here’s a second complication of British ice bucket efforts, including such luminaries as Dame Judi Dench, Sir Patrick Stewart, Dame Helen Mirren, Doctor Who star Karen Gillan and Helena Bonham Carter, among many other familiar faces.

Watch: See the First Trailer For Karen Gillan’s New ABC Comedy ‘Selfie’

As previously mentioned, former Doctor Who companion Karen Gillan will be headed back to our television screens this Fall, as the star of a brand new ABC comedy called Selfie.

Gillan’s new show is ostensibly a My Fair Lady update, and follows the story of a self-obssessed social media star named Eliza Dooley (in case you didn’t get this was a My Fair Lady remake), who realizes that a “like” doesn’t necessarily translate to a friend. She becomes internet famous following the release of a particularly humiliating viral video, and subsequently hires a marketing expert – played by the always awesome John Cho (Sleepy Hollow, Star Trek) to help her repair her tarnished image.

‘Doctor Who’s’ Karen Gillan to Star in New ABC Sitcom ‘Selfie’

Fear not, fans of Doctor Who companion Amy Pond – her portrayer Karen Gillan will back on your television screens again this Fall.

Gillan is set to star in a new ABC comedy from Emily Kapnek, creator of the network’s current hit Suburgatory. Called Selfie, the half-hour sitcom is apparently a modern take on My Fair Lady, and tells the story of a self-obsessed twenty-something named Eliza Dooley (ha ha, right?). After suffering a public and humiliating breakup, she becomes the subject of a viral video and suddenly has more social media "followers" than she ever imagined -- but for all the wrong reasons. She then enlists the help of a marketing expert at her company to help repair her tarnished image.

Check Out ‘Doctor Who’ Star Karen Gillan in the Trailer for Her New Horror Flick ‘Oculus’

Former Doctor Who companion Karen Gillan has certainly kept herself busy since she exited the TARDIS back. And her goal appears to be trying roles in every kind of project. She’s since starred in an indie romantic comedy called Not Another Happy Ending and landed the role of a major sci-fi villain in upcoming Marvel tentpole Guardians of the Galaxy. She’s also playing the lead role in a creepy new horror film called Oculus, which has released its first official trailer.

Gillan, who rose to international fame as sidekick to Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor, stars as Kaylie Russell, a young woman who attempts to prove that her brother Tim did not murder their parents by insisting that the real culprit was a malevolent supernatural force that lurks in a particular mirror in their house, which may have also been responsible for the violent deaths of many others over the years.

New Preview for the Doctor Who 2012 Christmas Special, The Snowmen!

We’re just 12 days out from Christmas but, definitely probably possibly just as importantly, this means that we’re also just 12 days away from the premiere of the Doctor Who Christmas special, The Snowmen!

We got our first sneak peek at the Who holiday installment during the BBC’s annual Children in Need charity telethon, but now the “official” trailer has arrived, which features some new footage and a longer look at our titular Snowmen villains.

The Snowmen will also be our first “official” introduction to new companion Jenna-Louise Coleman who will be attempting to fill the shoes of previous TARDIS residents Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill. If her surprise appearance in Series 7’s Asylum of the Daleks was any indication, she’s going to do better than fine here in her new gig. (I’m still rabidly curious to find out how this new girl Clara Oswin is connected to the Oswin Oswald we met on the Dalek ship, but it’s probably best not to get our hopes up that that is going to be addressed in any meaningful way in the holiday episode.)

All that said – if you ask me just from the roughly two minutes of footage between these two trailers, The Snowmen already looks miles better than The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe from last year. Richard E. Grant looks appropriately evil and villainous – and he’s not even the episode’s biggest guest star. That’s because the Snowmen are being voiced by none other than Sir Ian McKellen! It’s really like Santa is bringing me an episode featuring pretty much every one of my favorite flavors of geek in one big, fabulously nerdy ball. Best present ever! (Well, almost. Throw Benedict Cumberbatch in there, Santa, and I’ll be happy forever. Just so you know!)

Doctor Who 2012 Christmas Special 'The Snowmen' Trailer and Prequel

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Well, almost. We’re a little bit over a month away from this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special and the “official” introduction of brand-new companion Jenna-Louise Coleman.

Finally, we get our first look at the trailer for this highly anticipated episode, as well as a prequel clip meant to bridge the gap between The Angels Take Manhattan and this year’s holiday installment, titled simply The Snowmen. The new footage premiered during BBC’s annual Children in Need charity telethon and it seems safe to assume that the internet is already rife with speculation and chatter about what this all means for the future of our favorite Time Lord.

Click through for your first look at The Snowmen, and get those holiday countdown calendars ready. BBC America is once again day and dating the Christmas special with the UK, so we’ll only have to wait a mere five hours more than our friends across the pond. Huzzah!

A Tiny, Tiny Tease for Doctor Who’s Christmas Special

Doctor Who just wrapped an emotional – if, in my opinion, uneven – first half of its seventh series with the departures of companions Amy and Rory, played Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill. Gillan and Darvill now hold the title of longest-running companions in the “New Who” era (i.e. post-2005) and no matter how you may have felt about the particulars of their characters – some people (coughmecough) may have loved Rory and not been wild about Amy, who knows – their exit was handled well and very affecting.

But, this is Doctor Who, which thrives on change and (dare I say it) regeneration – so we won’t have too much time to be sad about the Ponds’ exit before a new companion will arrive on the scene. This time around, it’s Jenna-Louise Coleman stepping into the TARDIS to play a character that is pretty shrouded in mystery (particularly if you take Asylum of the Daleks into consideration. Timey wimey!)

Following the conclusion of The Angels Take Manhattan on Saturday, the tiniest of tiny teaser trailers aired for the upcoming Christmas special, in which Coleman makes her debut, in what appears to be (very, very interesting) Victorian dress. We’re ever so close to the premiere of Doctor Who Series 7 – it was officially announced this morning that the sci-fi hit will return September 1 on both the BBC and BBC America. (Huzzah for same day and date broadcasting!)

Consequently, lots has been happening in the world of Who the past week or so, including the arrival of two brand new trailers, a screening of Series 7 premiere Asylum of the Daleks in London, the release of a bunch of new promotional images and the announcement of the first five episode titles.

The Countdown to Series 7 is On – New Doctor Who Trailer and Promotional Art!

The first trailer for the upcoming seventh series of Doctor Who hit the internet this morning and in a word, it's awesome. The show’s producers really weren’t kidding apparently, when they said this season would have a “blockbuster” feel – this clip could probably compete with most movie ads.

The first proper footage from Series 7 – outside of the clips they screened for fans at Comic Con - is quite impressive, including everything from Daleks to dinosaurs to Weeping Angels to River Song to Detective Inspector Lestrade from Sherlock (sort of). No official date has been announced for Doctor Who’s return as yet, though most people online are speculating that the premiere will happen in late August. (Since BBC America has been screening Who the same day-and-date as BBC One, it’s likely this will hold true in the States, as well.)

Click through for a look at the new Doctor Who trailer for yourselves, as well as the first bit of (really amazing) Series 7 promotional art.

First Look at Doctor’s Matt Smith and New Companion Jenna-Louise Coleman

The BBC has released the first official photos of Doctor Who star Matt Smith on location with brand new companion Jenna-Louise Coleman. Now we can actually get a look at Smith and Coleman together – if not strictly in action –and, I have to admit, this did sort of stoke my excitement for the series’ return. Shooting is well under way on the Doctor’s latest adventure and the second read-through featuring Coleman’s character took place this week at the BBC’s Roath Lock Studios, according to the network.

Doctor Who Series 7 is set to premiere this Fall, with Coleman taking over as the new companion in the TARDIS starting from the Christmas special. It’s been previously revealed that current companions Amy and Rory Pond (played by the fabulous Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill) will be departing the show during a “heartbreaking” storyline in the season’s fifth episode. For me, the jury’s out on Coleman until we see some actual footage. She looks adorable, but I can’t get anything about her character from a couple of pictures (other than the fact that I seriously covet that red bag she’s sporting). She looks awfully young, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing, nor is it even particularly new ground for this show as far as casting goes. We’ll all have to wait and see.

One snap judgment I do have to share though: I love Eleven's new outfit! Click through and take a look for yourself!
