'Such Brave Girls' To Get Braver as Season 2 Greenlit
Such Brave Girls is going to have to get a little braver, as the BBC has commissioned the series for a second season. The Kat Sadler-penned series, which also stars the emerging writer, was a critical darling when it arrived in 2023. (Our own critic, Amy Amatangelo, admitted it was an acquired taste in her review, but one apparently many critics shared, including her.)
For those who did not catch the first season, or assumed it wasn’t for them, the series focuses on sisters Josie and Billie and their mother Deb, who are finally starting to dig their way out of the rut they’ve been living in to make themselves a better life when they discover one will not be coming, despite the numerous orders they’ve put in for it. However, these characters are not willing to learn anything, and their growth arcs leave them mostly right back where they were when the story began.
The series was initially commissioned by Jon Petrie, Director of BBC Comedy, who sounded chuffed in his remarks in the press release greenlighting the second season. “In Such Brave Girls, Kat Sadler created a unique comedy that made a real impact with audiences,” said Petrie. “Her brave and honest take on the family sitcom showcases her undeniable talent and solidifies her position as one of the most innovative voices in comedy today. It was a no-brainer to have the show back for a second time.” The BBC has ordered six more installments of the show, so the new season will run the same length as the first one, and is expected to start filming in the latter half of 2024.
Writer and creator Kat Sadler is up for a BAFTA during the primetime ceremony on Sunday, May 12, 2024. But even if she doesn't take home the statue, she's already won one at the pre-show "BAFTA Craft Award" (which is the equivalent of the Creative Arts Emmys, aka all those categories that don't make the primetime cut), landing a win for Emerging Talent, Fiction. In a statement about the renewal, she said:
“It’s a sick pleasure that these horrible characters get to live another day, and I’m now contractually obliged to put them through hell again. The BBC are masochists and I’m very grateful.”
For Season 2, the only returnees confirmed so far are Sadler as Josie, her real-life sister Lizzie Davidson as her on-screen sister Billie, and Louise Brealey (Sherlock) as their mum Deb. Other returnees or additions will be announced in due course.
Sadler will once again pen all episodes, and director Simon Bird is expected to return to helm at least some of the second season, with Catherine Gosling Fuller once again producing. Sadler executive produces with Jack Bayles and Phil Clarke in association with A24.
Such Brave Girls Season 2 will come to the BBC and Hulu in 2025.
